Boys’ Lacrosse: Westfield 9, Oakton 6

By Angela Watts
Assistant GM, Washington D.C. Metro Area

** Click the links above to access a complete photo gallery and dozens of video highlights from Tuesday’s game!

With Westfield holding a four-goal lead with about four minutes left in Tuesday night’s game against rival Oakton, the reserve players on the Bulldogs’ sideline started spontaneously jumping up-and-down.

The movement could have been done in an effort to warm from the night’s unusually frigid temperatures.

It could also have been nerves: Westfield had already blown three leads earlier this season, including a substantial, five-goal lead in its season-opening loss to Madison.

But neither of those option were the reality.

The Bulldogs, instead, were pulsating with sheer excitement.

And when the final horn sounded to secure their 9-6 victory over last year’s Virginia AAA state runner-up, Westfield’s players celebrated with an enthusiasm not always seen during regular-season games.

“I think this is the kind of win that can really spark a team,” first-year Bulldog Coach Brian Dilley said. “I mean, we know that this is just a regular-season game and that the regular-season is a grind. So in some respects the victory is just a victory. … But I also know that this can give us great confidence moving forward.”

It was Oakton (3-1 overall, 2-1 Concorde District) that struck first, jumping to a 3-0 lead on the strength of an early goal by junior Nick Ward and a pair of back-to-back goals by seniors Barrett Johnson and Wesley Roberts that came a mere five seconds apart.

But the Bulldogs (2-3, 2-1) answered with three goals in the final 3 minutes, 20 seconds of the first quarter to knot the score at 3 and then added two more unanswered goals to take a 5-3 lead with 11:18 left in the third quarter.

Westfield junior Eric Alter netted two of his game-high three goals during that stretch, while fellow juniors Johnny Esposito, Austin FallonForrest Fisher also got in on the action.

“Eric is a very key part of our team,” Dilley said. “He’s our No. 1 face-off guy and he is definitely one of our main contributors. I look to him every night to have a big game for us.”

And whenever the Cougars threatened — as they did on a second goal by Johnson and another by junior Andrew Leonard in the third period — the Bulldogs promptly responded. Johnson scored with 9:12 showing on the clock and Fallon’s second goal followed :49 seconds later; Leonard got on the board with 1:05 left in the period and Alter’s third and final goal followed :56 seconds later.

Westfield then netted two more insurance goals — one by sophomore Ryan O’Sullivan and another by junior defender Connor McCeney — to seal the victory.

Bulldog senior Woody Angle assisted on four of his team’s nine goals.

“The credit goes to our practices,” Dilley said. “Our practices have gotten better. So the problem with the leads that we have blown seem to have kind of taken care of itself. Practice is our biggest focus and we’re practicing better every day … and today was the end result.

“It’s a 37-man roster and they call come out ready and prepared every day. I can’t ask for much more than that.”

2009 All-Beltway: Bradley Phillips

Bradley Phillips, Oakton, Junior

2009 All-Beltway Boys Swimming First Team

Oakton junior Bradley Phillips’ name littered the results pages at the Northern Region and Virginia AAA state meets in February. He won both the district, region and state 200-yard freestyle, with an automatic All-American time of 1:40.62 at States. In the region race, he set a Northern Region record at 1:40.02. In the state race, he made the final turn in third place trailing by over a quarter-of-a-second, but made up three-tenths in the final 50 meters.

At the Concorde District meet, Phillips set a district record in the 500-yard freestyle, swimming at 4:31.33. He finished second in that event the Northern Region and state meets, but had the second-fastest regional time ever and the third-fastest time in Virginia AAA history, 4:30.89. The latter was another automatic All-American time.

Phillips was the first leg of the Northern Region championship 400-yard freestyle relay team, which set a regional record (3:07.28) and was a pivotal event in the Cougars’ successful quest to capture the regional crown. Oakton’s win ended a six-year streak of Northern Region championship for rival Robinson.

2009 All-Beltway: Michael Hallock

Michael Hallock, Oakton, Senior

2009 All-Beltway Boys Swimming First Team

Oakton senior Michael Hallock won the 100-yard backstroke at the Concorde District meet with a time of :52.73 and at the Virginia AAA State meet at :50.30, :00.1 from the state record. Both are automatic All-American times. He won the state meet after qualifying sixth in preliminaries.

At the Northern Region meet, Hallock won the 100-yard backstroke (:50.27), 100-yard freestyle (:46.06), swam the first leg of the record-setting 200-yard medley relay team (1:35.09) and the anchor leg of the record-setting 400-yard freestyle relay team (3:07.28). Hallock finished second in the 100-yard freestyle at the district and state meets, recording automatic All-American times in the latter at :46.21.

He was a part of the state-record 200-yard medley relay last year (1:34.85), the Concorde District and Northern Region championship team in 2009 (1:37.17) and top qualifying team at the Virginia AAA state meet this year. But in the state final, a quest for a repeat was quelled when a teammate left the blocks early. Hallock also anchored the 400-yard freestyle relay team that finished third in Virginia.

No. 10 — Cook-ing the D
W.C.A.C., Va./Md./D.C. — In the D.C. City title game, Stag sophomore Quinn Cook spins, dribbles into traffic and converts an up-and-under in DeMatha’s 55-48 win over Ballou.

No. 9 — No Kain, No Gain
Loudoun County, Virginia — Raider junior Alissa Kain erupted for 14 of her game-high 23 points in the third quarter of the Loudoun County 63-47 win over Turner Ashby in the Virginia AA Group 4 championship game. The Raiders won the school’s first-ever — and County’s second-ever — boys’ or girls’ state basketball title.

No. 8 — Alexander Slam Bell
Northern Region, Virginia — Robinson, ranked No. 2 in the nation by ESPNRise, won its season-opening game at Woodson, 2-0. Senior midfielder Connor Alexander cemented the victory with this 18-yard, left-footed blast in the 53rd minute.

No. 7 — Cougar Carnival
Northern Region, Virginia
— In the Virginia AAA state final, Oakton shattered the state
tournament record by sinking 14 3-pointers in its championship game
loss to Princess Anne. The Cougars tied the previous record — nine —
in their state quarterfinal win.

No. 6 — City Title HD
D.C.I.A.A., Washington, DC — Warrior junior Ronika Ransford, held to two first-half points, exploded for 19 more after halftime as H.D. Woodson captured the grils’ D.C. City Title, 61-43, over Good Counsel.

No. 5 — Five for Fighting
Prince George’s County, Maryland — At UMBC on Saturday, Eleanor Roosevelt won its fifth-consecutive girls’ Maryland 4A State championship, 67-39, over Blake. Raider senior Olivia Applewhite had 22 points and 11 rebounds in the final, both game-highs.

No. 4 — Sound of the Smiths
Northern Region, Virginia — Robinson junior Jensen Smith played hero in the 83rd minute of overtime in her team’s first game at Woodson. However, Cavalier sophomore Kaitlin Brooks netted the equalizer four minutes later to claim a point against the defending state champion Rams, ranked No. 3 in the nation.

No. 3 — Blue Devils’ Advocate   1  2  3
Montgomery County, Maryland — For the first time since 1968, there is a repeat state champion in the Maryland 4A classification. Springbrook (27-0) led by senior Jamal Olasewere, who recorded double-doubles in the state semifinals and finals, beat Wise, 73-61, in the title game.

No. 2 — Let Freedom Ring
Loudoun County, Virginia — Entering Saturday, no Loudoun County high school had won a boys’ or girls’ state basketball championship game. But in the 11 a.m. Virginia AA Group 3 girls’ final, Freedom ended the slump. Eagle junior Kelsey Buchanan record a triple-double — 11 points, 21 rebounds and 10 blocks — in Freedom’s 58-33 win over Lee-Staunton.

No. 1 — Do You Believe in Life After Glove
Prince George’s County, Maryland — In the Maryland 2A State semifinal, Douglass freshman Kavon Glover brought the crowd to its feet with this baseline steal, leap from outside the paint and jam over a Wicomico would-be defender for a dunk-and-one. The Eagles took out the Indians, 87-69, to reach the 2A finals.
