D.C. Beltway Area: Girls’ Soccer Top 10

Girls’ Soccer Top 10.
*Rankings and records as of April 27

1. Robinson (8-0-1) — LW: 1
The Rams beat Westfield and Yorktown last week by a combined 7-1, but face only more tests in the final week of the season. Robinson travels to No. 9 Oakton on Tuesday and plays No. 8 Stone Bridge on May 8.
2. Broad Run (9-0-1) — LW: 2
The Spartans have outscored their opponents 37-2 this year, including 15-0 in the last week. Broad Run has five Division I signees and will face Heritage (9-2-1) on Tuesday, Briar Woods (6-3-1) on Wednesday and Loudoun County (5-4-2) on Friday.
3. Loudoun Valley (8-0-0) — LW: 3
The Vikings have torched their first eight opponents, winning by a
combined 36-1 margin and sit comfortably atop the Cedar Run District. Loudoun Valley faces Stonewall Jackson, No. 10 Battlefield and Osbourn on Friday.
4. W.T. Woodson (9-1-1) — LW: 4
The Cavaliers had a trio of 3-0 wins last week, including one on the road against No. 7 McLean on Tuesday. Woodson, though, will be tested in the final week with a pair of non-district games. It hosts No. 6 West Springfield — winners of eight-straight games — on Thursday before hosting No. 9 Oakton on Monday. The combined records of those two opponents: 15-2-1.
5. Chantilly (8-1-1) — LW: 5
The
Chargers
beat the then-No. 7 Cougars, 2-1, on Friday. Chantilly has
outscored its opponents 30-6 this year, but closes with a brutal schedule. It faces No. 8 Stone Bridge at home
on Wednesday, No. 7 McLean on the road on Thursday and Centreville next week.
6. West Springfield (8-1-1) — LW: 8

The
Spartans, who returned seven starters, have won eight consecutive games
after opening the season with a 1-1 draw to No. 8 Stone Bridge and a 1-0
loss to Centreville. During its winning streak, West Springfield has
outscored its opponents 32-0, including an 8-0 win over then-No. 10 South County last week. It faces No. 4 W.T. Woodson on Thursday, which will be covered by DigitalSports.
7. McLean (9-1-0) — LW: 6
The
Highlanders have netted a Northern Region-best 44 goals this season,
while allowing just nine. McLean fell to No. 4 Woodson on Tuesday, 3-0, but rebounded with back-to-back wins over Langley, 2-0 (article and highlights HERE), and Marshall, 5-0. It faces No. 5 Chantilly on Thursday.
8. Stone Bridge (7-2-2) — LW: 9
The
Bulldogs have won six games in a row by a combined 23-3, and all were district wins. Stone Bridge’s
two losses are to No. 2 Broad Run, 2-1, and No. 7 McLean, 2-1. It closes the season with
back-to-back matches against No. 5 Chantilly — to be played this Wednesday — and No. 1 Robinson on May 8.
9. Oakton (7-1-0) — LW: 7
The Cougars have outscored their opponents by a collective 37-5. But last week, Oakton suffered its first loss to No. 5 Chantilly, 2-1, before rebounding to beat Centreville, 5-1. It faces No. 1 Robinson at home tonight.
10. Battlefield (6-2-1) — LW: N/A
The Bobcats beat Culpeper, 8-0, in their only game last week. But a match-up with unbeaten — and untested — No. 3 Loudoun Valley looms huge in Purcellville on Wednesday.

Also Receiving Votes — listed alphabetically
Centreville (5-3-1)
Heritage (9-2-1)
South County (4-2-2) — LW: 10

No. 10 –Mindick Says, “No, No” to No-No
S.M.A.C., Maryland
— Although Thomas Stone senior starter Ricky Cusic had faced the
minimum 15 batters through five innings against Patuxent, a one-out
walk and a pair of errors cut his 4-0 lead in half. Cusic still had the
no-hitter in tact, though, until Patuxent senior Joey Mindick stepped
in to launch this offering into right field to give the Panthers a 5-4
lead, despite having just one hit. Play between the teams was suspended
after the eighth inning due to lightning with the score tied, 5-5.

No. 9 –Panthers Break Out
Montgomery County, Maryland
— In an explosive second inning, Paint Branch junior Todd Schultz and
freshman Nick Ponofala each hit their first home runs of the season,
and each was a two-run shot. For Ponofala, he was expected to start the
junior varsity game, but got a day-of-game call-up when Seneca Valley
could not field a JV team. The Panthers beat the Screaming Eagles, 11-5.

No. 8 — Doyle Sets School Record
Northern Region, Virginia
— Six different Mount Vernon players scored in its 18-6 win over
Stuart on Senior Night – and Major junior attack Brendan Doyle fed
almost every one of them. Doyle broke the Mount Vernon single-game
record for assists, with eight.

No. 7 –Mutryn Ties School Record

Montgomery County, Maryland
— Churchill senior – and Landon transfer — Michael Mutryn‘s first
love is hockey. He showed it on this play, slapping a ground ball into
the net for one of his seven goals on the night. Mutryn tied a program
record with the seven goals in the 10-3 over rival Wootton. The Bulldog
record was set in 2002 by Tommy Wentz and tied in 2004 by Alex Middel.

No. 6 –MAXimum Altitude
Northern Region, Virginia —
Hayfield sophomore Elbert Maxwell won the boys’ high jump at the
Golden Eagle Track Classic at Freedom in Woodbridge. Maxwell cleared
his previous personal record of 6-feet, 2-inches by clearing 6-feet,
4-inches here, which qualified him for the Virginia AAA State meet.

No. 5– Hot Corner
Matty Ice
Northern Region, Virginia
With the lead-off runner on first base against Westfield in the bottom
of the fourth inning, Oakton third baseman Matt Chandler abruptly ends
this Bulldog at-bat by diving to catch the fouled-off sacrifice bunt
attempt.

Scoville, Garifo Game-Saving Out
Northern Region, Virginia
— Later that game, the Cougars had runners on the corners with two
outs and trailed the Bulldogs, 2-1, when Oakton pitcher-of-record Adam
Henne
stepped in. He laced the ball down the left-field line, but was
robbed by Westfield sophomore third basemen Aaron Scoville. Scoville
threw across the diamond to Nick Garifo at first, who was forced from
the bag, but still applied the tag for the third out. The Bulldogs won,
2-1, to lock up coach Chuck Welch‘s 300th career win.

No. 4 –Seebeck, Seebeck Run
Northern Region, Virginia
— McLean freshman Josie Seebeck steals the ball from Langley in a
dangerous spot, weaves through four defenders and places the ball
out-of-reach of the Saxon goalkeeper in the eighth minute. The
Highlanders won, 2-0, to earn the MYS Trophy — formerly the Rotary Cup — and improve to 8-1 on the year.

No. 3 –Mitchell Untouchable
S.M.A.C., Maryland
Melanie Mitchell pitched her second perfect game of the season in
McDonough’s 5-0 win over the visiting Leonardtown Raiders on Friday
afternoon. Mitchell recorded 17 of the 21 outs via the strikeout in her
10th shutout in 11 games this season. Second baseman Jasmine Hairston
helped save the perfect game in the top of the fifth, making a diving
stop on a grounder between first and second and throwing — off her
stomach — to first baseman Laura Borawski for the out.

No. 2 –Pull the Crigger
S.M.A.C., Maryland — In
Calvert’s 3-2 win over Stone, Cavalier senior Brandon Crigger struck
out 14 Cougars, while allowing just two hits in complete game.

No. 1 — Big Mac
Northern Region, Virginia
— In the Battle of the Bulldogs, sophomore Jess McNamara hit a
walk-off, solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift
Westfield over Stone Bridge, 3-2. The Fairfax County version of the
Bulldogs improved to 11-3 on the year a capped an impressive three-win
week. Westfield beat O’Connell, 5-3 on the previous Saturday, and
Concorde District rivals Oakton and Robinson, 8-2 on Wednesday and
16-10 on Thursday, respectively.

Baseball: No. 1 Westfield 2, Oakton 1

Entering this season, Westfield coach Chuck Welch sat at 288 career victories, needing 12 to reach the 300-win plateau.

And it took just 13 games for the Bulldogs to get him there.

With balmy winds blowing for the game’s entirety, No. 1 Westfield out-dueled Oakton, 2-1, to maintain its spot atop the Concorde District and earn Welch the career milestone on Wednesday.

“It’s not so much an individual achievement as it is an accumulation of 25 years of coaching,” said Welch, who coached at Langley for 16 seasons before coming to Westfield in 2000. “It’s a lot of things. It’s an honor for everybody involved in the program, not just me. I’m just one person of 26 or 27 that are out here on the field.

“It’s very neat that I’ve been able to coach that long to get to that. But for me, I don’t see it as an individual honor. I see it as a whole group kind of thing.”

Added Bulldog junior third baseman Aaron Scoville, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI: “I’m really proud of Coach Welch because he really spends a lot of time out here helping us to get better. It feels really good to be a part of that.”

And nearly every Westfield starter had a hand in the historic win.

Senior right fielder Cole McInturff doubled on the first pitch of his lead-off at-bat in the first inning. He also ended Oakton’s half of the third by gunning down a would-be run-scorer at home on an outfield assist.

Senior second baseman Tommy Verbanic capped a three-up, three-down fifth inning with a sprinting scoop and flip to first.

Sophomore starting pitcher Aaron Hoover went five and two-thirds innings, scattering seven hits and giving up one earned run. Of the 21 batters he faced, 16 saw first-pitch strikes.

And, when Hoover was pulled for freshman reliever Kyle Corman with runners at the corners and two out in the sixth, it was Scoville who dove to his right to rob a certain double before hopping to his feet and firing to first.

Even though the throw was high and right of the bag, senior first baseman Nick Garifo leaped back, caught Scoville’s bullet and applied the tag to retire the runner — and end the Cougar threat.

“The confidence is great — to know that you can throw strikes and get those outs,” said Hoover, whose seven hits allowed were all singles. “To get important ones in the key situations just to have that confidence, like Cole in the outfield.

“With plays like that, you know if you’re throwing strikes, they’re going to be getting outs behind you.”

Added Welch, whose club’s only loss came to Starrs Mill, Ga., in 12 innings at the Hanrahan Invitaional Tournament: “The defense has been great all year long. We just haven’t hit for some reason and we’re hoping that’s going to start to happen at some point. In the district, we’re now 7-0. We’ve had four 2-1 games, two 3-2 games and one 3-0 game. So the pitching and defense have been here all year long.

“We still need to get the bats going. I think it’d be a lot easier to play defense and pitch if you had a little bit of a lead … Scoville made a great play and Hoover was able to battle it out, but all the kids are like that.”

Girls’ Soccer Top 10.
*Rankings and records as of April 20

1. Robinson (6-0-1) — LW: 1
In the year after they won the Virginia AAA State title, the Rams only fortified their strength of schedule. Robinson has faced No. 4 W.T. Woodson, No. 5 Chantilly, perennial Northern Region power Lake Braddock, perennial Central Region power Deep Run and will play No. 7 Oakton on April 28. After beating the Chargers, 2-0, in impressive fashion on Friday (article and highlights HERE), the Rams face West Potomac, Westfield and Yorktown this week.
2. Broad Run (7-0-1) — LW: 4
The Spartans have outscored their opponents 22-2 this year, including 8-0 in the last week. Broad Run beat Dulles District foes Potomac Falls and Dominion 5-0 and 3-0, respectively.
3. Loudoun Valley (7-0-0) — LW: 5
The Vikings have torched their first seven opponents, winning by a combined 31-1 margin and sit comfortably atop the Cedar Run District.
4. W.T. Woodson (6-1-1) — LW: 2
Weather willing, Woodson plays No. 6 McLean on April 21. Last week, after opening with a 2-0 road loss to No. 9 Stone Bridge, the Cavaliers rebounded with a 5-3 win over Langley.
5. Chantilly (6-1-1) — LW: 3
The
Chargers beat Fairfax, 3-0, early last week before falling to No. 1 Robinson, 2-0, on the road on Friday. Even with that defeat, Chantilly has outscored its opponents 25-4 this year. It faces No. 7 Oakton at home on Friday.
6. McLean (7-0-0) — LW: 6
The
Highlanders have netted a Northern Region-best 37 goals this season,
while allowing just six, but a 15-0 season-opening win at Wakefield
skews that statistic. McLean faces No. 4 Woodson and Langley this week, weather willing.
7. Oakton (6-0-0) — LW: 7
No
team has gotten within three goals of the Cougars this season as they
have outscored their opponents by a collective 31-2. In a four-day span beginning on April 24, Oakton plays No. 5 Chantilly, Centreville and No. 1 Robinson.
8. West Springfield (6-1-1) — LW: 9
The
Spartans, who returned seven starters, have won six consecutive games

outscored its opponents 21-0.
9. Stone Bridge (4-2-2) — LW: N/A
The Bulldogs have won three games in a row by a combined 13-0, including a 2-0 home win over then-No. 2 W.T. Woodson on Tuesday. Stone Bridge’s two losses are to No. 2 Broad Run, 2-1, and No. 6 McLean, 2-1. It faces South Lakes and Madison this week, but closes the season with back-to-back matches against No. 5 Chantilly and No. 1 Robinson.
10. South County (3-1-2) — LW: N/A
Since a disappointing 4-1 loss to Centreville, the Stallions are 3-0-2, with their three wins coming by a combined 21-0 margin. South County also tied No. 5 Chantilly, 1-1, on March 24. It faces No. 8 West Springfield at home on Wednesday night.

D.C. Beltway Area: Girls’ Soccer Top 10

Girls’ Soccer Top 10.
*Rankings and records as of April 14, 2 p.m

1. Robinson (5-0-1)
The
Rams were 21-1-0 last season en route to capturing the Virginia AAA
state title and returned nine starters from that team. Robinson has
outscored its opponents 17-4 this season and only has a 2-2 road draw
with No. 2 W.T. Woodson keeping it from perfection. It faces No. 3
Chantilly on Friday.
2. W.T. Woodson (5-0-1)
The Cavaliers only graduated four players from last year’s team that went 12-3-2, but are without Florida State-bound senior Niki Mercier,
who will miss the season with a knee injury. Woodson tied No. 1
Robinson, 2-2, on April 1 — no fooling — and has a marquee match with
No. 6 McLean on April 21.
3. Chantilly (5-0-1)
The
Chargers have outscored their opponents 20-2 this season, but 16 of
those goals came in the first three games. Chantilly faces No. 1
Robinson on the road on Friday.
4. Broad Run (5-0-1)
The Spartans went 24-0-0 last season en route to the Virginia AA State title and have five college signees: Holly King (Florida), Valerie Powell (Arkansas), Kelly Evans (Old Dominion), Caitlin Hunter (UNC-Wilmington) and Taylor Starr (Tusculum). Broad Run has outscored its opponents 14-2 this year.
5. Loudoun Valley (6-0-0)
The Vikings have torched their first six opponents, winning by a combined 23-1 margin.
6. McLean (6-0-0)
The
Highlanders have posted a Northern Region-best 30 goals this season,
while allowing just six, but a 15-0 season-opening win at Wakefield
skews that statistic. McLean faces South Lakes and Jefferson this week
before squaring off with No. 2 Woodson on April 21.
7. Oakton (5-0-0)
No
team has gotten within three goals of the Cougars this season as they
have outscored their opponents by a collective 28-2. Oakton closes its
season with four consecutive games teams either in the Top 10 or those
that also received votes.
8. Woodbridge (3-2-1)
The
Vikings knocked off defending state runner-up Battlefield, 4-0, earlier
this season, but fell to defending state champion No. 1 Robinson, 4-1,
on March 16. Woodbridge plays Potomac (Va.) and Forest Park this week.
9. West Springfield (5-1-1)
The
Spartans, who returned seven starters, have won five consecutive games
after opening the season with a 1-1 draw with Stone Bridge and a 1-0
loss to Centreville. During its winning streak, West Springfield has
outscored its opponents 13-0.
10. Washington-Lee (6-1-0)
The
Generals have marched out to a surprising start with amazing defense,
allowing only six goals through seven goals. But three of those allowed
came in a 3-0 loss to No. 9 West Springfield on March 25.

Boys’ Soccer: Blackburn Rovers FC 2, GFA Elite 0

By Phil Murphy

*Click the links on the top-left for full video and photo coverage from Thursday’s games.*

With its tournament life at stake, Great Falls Elite rattled off repeated scoring chances against Blackburn Rovers FC.

Unfortunately for the team from Fairfax County, Va., however, the last line of English defense was true to form.

Blackburn goalkeeper Matthew Urwin had five saves — and was assisted by a pair of open-goal blocked shots by his back line — en route to a clean sheet and a 2-0 win for the Premiere League side at Georgetown University on Thursday, which locked up a berth in the Tiffany Cup championship.

“It’s always good,” Urwin said of his shutout. “If you keep the clean sheet, you don’t lose, do you? It’s always good to keep the clean sheet.”

While shutouts make losses impossible, wins require goals.

And in the sixth minute, Blackburn striker Jason Blanton — a U-17 England National Team call-up — earned one for the visitors on a free kick.

The one-goal lead held for the remainder of the first half, despite several threats to goal from GFA Elite.

The most menacing chance was an artful volley by midfielder Dylan Bowman — a U-17 Men’s National Team pool player — that Urwin frayed with a leaping left-handed punch in the 13th minute.

But it was not until the 61st minute that the club from Northwest England lengthened its margin.

Bowman made a long run down the left channel before firing a low shot that was kicked to the top of the box by GFA keeper Mark Bixler. Rovers midfielder Filip Pivkovski settled the rebound, dribbled to the end line and played a ball to midfielder James Knowles at the top of the six.

Knowles stretched the net with a smooth, right-footed strike, all but clinching a win and a championship game berth with Real Madrid CF at Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, Va., on Saturday at 11 a.m.

“It takes pressure of you,” said Urwin of Knowles’ insurance goal. “You still have to work hard, but it keeps pressure of you.

“That’s a bit better, isn’t it?”

Added Knowles, a Northern Ireland youth national team member: “It gives us more time to relax and we can bring players off, which gives us more time to relax for the final.”

GFA Elite beats local foe before taking on World

By Ryan Mink
rmink@digitalsports.com

Before Great Falls Academy Elite has to play some of the top teams amateur club teams from around the world, it got to face a familiar foe in the Freestate Soccer Academy from Bowie, Md.

The two teams have played four or five times in the past couple months. And according to forward K.C. Onyeador, GFA Elite has come out on top each time.

That pattern continued Monday as GFA Elite defeated its metro area foe, 2-0, at Trinity College in GFA’s first game in the International Amateur Soccer Tournament

Onyeador, who plays for Park View High School, scored his team’s second goal while National Pool player Dylan Bowman of James River broke what was a scoreless game with a  header goal three minutes into the second half.

“We hold the upper hand,” Bowman said of the rivalry with Freestate. “We knew we had some chances and knew we were going to get some second half goals. We just had to put them away.”

Bowman’s goal came off a cross from Robinson forward Koko Makumbi. The chipped cross found Bowman in traffic near the penalty stripe. His header wasn’t all that powerful but it was just inside the right post to give GFA a 1-0 lead.

“Dylan’s goal, that was a great goal,” Onyeador said. “The ball was over me and Dylan comes out of nowhere and puts it in the bottom corner.”

“Probably my first headed goal,” Bowman added.

Onyeador’s goal, off a nifty little pass from Bowman, was scored just 14 minutes later in the 62nd minute.

But now it’s on to literally more foreign competition for GFA Elite. The club will face Chivas de Corazon from Guadalajara, Mexico on Wednesday and Blackburn Rovers from Blackburn, England on Thursday.

“It’s good to get off to a good start because our next challenges are going to be pretty big,” Onyeador said.

GFA Elite Coach Ed Beach watched the two teams battle to a tie on Sunday.

“I was very, very, very impressed,” Beach said. “It seems they brought over their better players and we’ll have our hands more than full.”
