No. 1 Westfield Shuts Out No. 8 Oakton, 35-0

By Jessica Lloyd
Westfield High Senior

It
could have been the momentum of an undefeated season. Or maybe it was
the intensity of the long-standing rivalry. The fact that it was
Oakton??s senior night was also a major motivating factor on a cold, wet
Saturday night game.

But more than anything, No. 1 Westfield
just came ready to play in a 35-0 victory over No. 8 Oakton to resulted
in its fourth shutout of the season.

For the Bulldogs (9-0
overall, 5-0 Concorde District) , it was apparent from the first few
drives of the game that the Cougars (5-4, 3-2) were in for more than
they had asked for that night. Oakton??s offense was challenged from the
start as Westfield, putting faith in their defense, won the toss and
elected to defend on the opening kickoff.

Only a few drives into the game, Westfield senior linebacker Brian Kennedy
put aside the night??s cold atmosphere and made his own bone-chilling
tackle deep in Oakton territory, knocking the ball loose. Westfield
recovered, but a David Skahn 42-yard field goal attempt sailed wide left.

Kennedy,
ever the playmaker, would create another opportunity, this time on the
offensive side of the ball. On Westfield’s next possession, he broke
free on a 25-yard touchdown run up the middle of the field for a 7-0
lead. The rest of the first quarter remained scoreless as the teams
battled, Westfield trying to pull ahead Oakton trying to catch up.

Just before the half, the Bulldogs got on the board again with a 13-yard scoring pass from senior quarterback Mike Glennon to senior wide receiver Johnny Pickett — his first glorifying moment of the night.

Westfield
was hurt by its own errors in the second quarter as two apparent
touchdowns were called back because of penalties. That was in addition
to another 6-yard touchdown reception by senior running back Steve Tabot in the first quarter that was similarly negated by a holding penalty.

Westfield senior Brian Kennedy, pictured here against Chantilly earlier this season, stood out both offensively and defensively for the Bulldogs in Saturday’s title-clinching win at Oakton.

Shortly after halftime, though, the Bulldogs got going. Glennon completed a pass to fellow senior — and back-up quarterback — Billy Samson
for a 15-yard score for a more comfortable, 21-0 lead. Late in the 3rd
quarter, Westfield secured its lead as they made a second attempt at
giving Pickett a chance to throw the ball up field on a wide receiver
pass. It took two attempts for the play to work, but finally senior
wide receiver Randy Johns hauled in Pickett??s second passing attempt for a 30-yard touchdown.

The Bulldogs added one final score when Glennon completed a 10-yard pass to senior wide receiver David Kruchko early in the fourth quarter.

Westfield,
which with Chantilly’s loss to Centreville on Monday has already secured
the 2007 Concorde District Championship, will look to put the finishing
touches on its undefeated regular-season when it travels to face
the Wildcats Friday.

Week 8 Football Round-Up

Week 8 Football Round-Up

No. 8 Oakton Rolls Up 40 Points to Rain on No. 10 Robinson’s Homecoming; Rain Puts and Early End to No. 1 Westfield’s 34-0 Shut Out of Herndon

No. 8 Oakton 40, No. 10 Robinson 14

By Eric Avissar

Sports Editor, Valor Dictus

In a game that was moved from Friday night to Saturday afternoon due to ominous weather, Oakton was determined to make it rain in a variety of ways on Robinson??s Homecoming game, rocking the Rams, 40-14.

The game stats, at first glance, are deceiving. Oakton accumulated 255 yards of offense, while Robinson was not far off the pace, finishing with 234 total yards. The Rams even won the time of possession battle.

However, Oakton set the tempo from the very beginning, as junior defensive back Joey Kopfman intercepted a Tim Meier pass and returned it 33 yards for a touchdown on the opening drive. The interception return was quickly followed by an Oakton field goal to give the Cougars an early, 10-0 lead.

Robinson made its first and only answer to an Oakton score early in the second quarter, with a slash-and-burn touchdown run by junior running back Wynton Fox from just inside Cougar territory to pull the Rams within three.

That was as close as Robinson would get, though, as Oakton answered back almost immediately on of a quarterback scamper in which senior Chris Coyer went untouched to the end zone from 21 yards out. Coyer??s touchdown sparked what proved to be 30 unanswered points by the Cougars.

Oakton scored in an array of ways, converting both of its field goal attempts while Coyer threw for two touchdowns. The Cougars’ leading rusher was Trey Watts, who totaled 55 yards and a touchdown on only seven carries. His lone touchdown proved to be crucial as Watts?? 16-yard score — set up by his own 44-yard punt return — effectively put the game out of reach at 33-7.

The key to Oakton??s victory was field position. The Cougars continually forced Ram turnovers and utilized their team speed in the return game to gain an advantage. Oakton’s average starting field position in the first half was its own 49-yard line; Robinson??s best was its own 36.

“I think the key to the win was field position,” Oakton junior linebacker Jack Tyler said. “We definitely got them on that. … We had great defensive stands, and our offense drove the ball down the field. We came into this game like it was a playoff game and we treated it like that. We played hard the whole game and it showed on the score board.”

Both Oakton??s running backs and receivers found plenty of daylight, scoring points in key situations.  Meanwhile, the Rams offense self-destructed. Robinson (4-4 overall, 1-3 Concorde District) was called for eight penalties for 65 yards, most of which came in situations that swept away momentum.

The loss comes as a blow to Robinson’s playoff hopes as they fall to 4-4 overall and 1-3 in the Concorde District. Oakton, which was won five of its past six games, improves to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the league. The Cougars are hoping the momentum from Saturday’s win carries over into a home showdown with top-ranked Westfield on Friday.

“They are a great pass offense and they have a great quarterback, so we need to shut their receivers down and shut their quarterback down,” Tyler said of the Bulldogs. “We need to stop them. I know our offense will play well, but our defense will need to stop them. They have a great offense.”

No. 1 Westfield 34, Herndon 0

By Jessica Lloyd
Westfield High Senior

As the Herndon and Westfield captains took the field Friday night, the Bulldogs, taking pride in their 42 seniors on their final regular-season home game, had all of its players line up right behind their captains.

It proved to be a good omen: Every point scored by the Bulldogs came from a senior player.

No. 1 Westfield (8-0 overall, 4-0 Concorde District (3-5, ) defended their undefeated title, beating visiting Herndon (3-4, 1-3), 34-0 in only three quarters of play.

Both teams were sluggish at the start, but Westfield scored the first points of the game on an easy touchdown run by Johnny Pickett. Dave Kruchko then scored his first of two touchdowns on the night on a pass reception from quarterback Mike Glennon. Westfield failed on the 2-point conversion attempt, but still held a 13-0 lead.

Then the Bulldogs’ defense got in on the fun with an interception returned for a touchdown by Kyle Goffredo, and Kruchko scored again for a 27-point lead at half time.

Only a few plays after the opening kickoff in the second half, Steven Tabot made the longest play of the night on a 64-yard touchdown run.

But then Mother Nature took center stage. Rain came pouring down with just :17 seconds remaining in the third quarter, forcing the officials to call a 30-minute rain delay and sending parents, fans and both teams running for cover. After the storm passed, the officials deemed the field unplayable, ending the game at 34-0.

Virginia AAA State Golf Tournament

Virginia AAA State Golf Tournament

Oakton Senior Danny Kim Wins the Group AAA Individual Title; Chantilly Takes Second in the Team Competition

By Jimmy Thomas
DigitalSports.com

Oakton senior Danny Kim was one stroke off the lead entering the second
round of the Virginia AAA State Golf tournament at Dominion Valley in
Haymarket. Jason Chun of Frank  W. Cox  High School in Richmond shot a
4-under-par 68 to hold the lead over Kim and All-Met Jake An of
Chantilly who finished day one with a 71.

An won both the Concorde District and Northern Region titles this year.

With
Oakton not competing in the team competition Kim’s tee time was quite a
bit earlier than his competitors. He posted a 70 on Day 2 — the final
day of competition — then grabbed a bite to eat and waited for his
competitors to trickle in.

“I was nervous the whole time,” Kim
said. “I knew there were a lot of good people that just made the turn
that could shoot low numbers.”

But his time proved well worth the wait. Kim’s two-day total of 139 was enough to hold off Nick Austin’s (James River) 140 and An’s 142 to give him the Group AAA individual state title.

The
team competition prove equally exciting as Westfield entered Day 2 only
one stroke behind Cox in the team competition, combining their top four
scores for a 298. Chantilly trailed by six, posting a 303 coming off of
winning the Northern Region Championship last week at Fairfax National
in Centreville.

Oakton senior Danny Kim, who captured the Virginia Group AAA individual golf championship, is congratulated by Chantilly Director of Athletics Terry Brown.

With a pair of 72’s from Ji Soo Park and Victor Monte the Chargers were able to close the gap and finish in second place (599). Westfield used steady team play from Tim Ritter, Brian Keith, Jack Debell and Chris Vigotsky to place third (600). Cox held on to win the team championship with a 594.

Other individual standouts include: Brigitte Baker (Langley) 75-75-150; Lauren Greenlief (Oakton) 74-77-151; Josh Apple (Stone Bridge) 74-76-150; Brian Jaeger (Langley) 78-76-154 and Kenny Towns (Lake Braddock) 82-86-168.
