Girls’ and Boys’ Playoff Basketball: Concorde District Championships

By Phil Murphy
Content Editor, DigitalSports.com

Girls’ Championship Game
No. 5 Oakton 53, Herndon 52

**Re-live the girls final in 13 min, 49 sec!! See the video player below the story.**

This was not the Herndon team of years – or even weeks – past. It was an undoubtedly more productive unit than that which lost eight of its final 10 regular-season games, finishing sixth out of the seven teams in the Concorde District.

But it was the same, old Oakton.

The Cougars, trailing by points two with 3 minutes, 37 seconds left in the fourth quarter, were spurred on by junior Brianna Johnson (team-high 14 points). She scored eight points and had a critical steal in the waning moments to drive Oakton past Herndon, 53-52.

“It was just determination,” said Johnson, in her first year as a member of the Cougar varsity team. “I didn’t play a very good first half of the game, but it came to the last seconds and someone had to do it.”

The win wraps up No. 5 Oakton’s 10th district title in 14 seasons and their fourth in a row.

Unlike the previous three seasons, however, this Concorde championship was not the double-digit decision played merely as a matter of formality. Herndon led 15-9 after the first quarter and had possession with a chance to win three times in the final three minutes.

The Hornets came into Saturday’s title game having defeated No. 7 Westfield (17-6) and No. 6 Centreville (19-4) to reach the championship round.

“Our team works well under pressure,” said Oakton’s Mandy Johnston, named tournament MVP after scoring 10 of her 12 points in the second quarter. “Coach [Fred] Priester always drives us. He’s like, ‘Pressure is a gift, not a responsibility.’ So the pressure probably helped us get back in the game and work hard.”

Cougars’ junior Erin McGartland added 13 points in the victory and senior Jackie Shewmaker tallied eight. The duo also combined to go 11-for-11 from the free-throw line.

Oakton (22-2), the 2005 Northern Region champion and 2007 Region runners-up, opens next week’s county-wide tournament versus Lake Braddock (7-13) at 7:30 p.m. on Monday.

For über-clutch Johnson, the recipe for continued success is simple.

“Bring excitement and determination,” she said. “If we keep it up, we’re good.”

Herndon (8-15) will also host No. 4 Lee (21-3) on Monday night.

Boys’ Championship Game
No. 2 Westfield 68, No. 4 Chantilly 56

**Re-live Saturday’s game, including extensive post-game coverage, in 15 min, 37 sec with the video player below the story. Interviews coming soon!!**

The Concorde District boys’ championship game between No. 4 Chantilly and top-seeded, No. 2 Westfield at Robinson began much like their second regular season match-up on Feb. 12.

A piping hot start by one side was met with a strong following-quarter response by the opposition.

However, in Saturday’s contest, the comeback was quelled prior to half time. There was no bench-player-turned-superstar with an easily-punned name to provide a knockout blow. And the Bulldogs were crowned Concorde District champs with a 68-56 victory over the Chargers.

“At the end of the first quarter, I made them look up at the score,” said fourth-year Westfield coach Doug Ewell. “I said, ‘Do you remember something?’ And they remembered.

“They didn’t want that to happen.”

The Bulldogs led 16-3 after that first period. And just as Westfield junior Will Snow — the Snowman — had scorched the Chargers after falling behind 14-3 in the pre-Valentines Day meeting, Chantilly scored 10 of the first 14 points of the second quarter to cut the Bulldog lead to single digits.

But this time, a jaw-dropping jam by Ball-State bound Bulldog senior Mo Hubbard violently swung the impetus back in Westfield’s favor.

“I always try to change the momentum,” said Hubbard, who finished with 12 points. “He tried to go up with me and I just went up higher.”

With Hubbard providing the thunder, it was up to senior guard Jamie Richardson to bring the lightning. Richardson, known for his explosiveness, scored a team-high 21 points, eight of which came on transition baskets.

“That’s just something that me, Mo and all the seniors have been doing since back when we were kids,” said Richardson, named the Tournament MVP. “We all grew up together. It’s just something that we do.”

Chantilly (21-3) hopes to rebound for the rubber-match defeat in their Regional opener Monday at home against No. 10 Annandale (13-10), which had its entire team in attendance.

Westfield (21-2) will host Lake Braddock (15-8), which beat the Bulldogs, 68-64, on Dec. 14.

“I’m a nervous wreck,” Ewell said. “I’m still figuring out how in the world we’re going to beat Lake Braddock.

“We’re probably going to play one of the best, sound basketball teams and probably one of the smartest basketball teams in the region.”

Girls’ Playoff Basketball: Concorde District Semifinals

By Jimmy Thomas
Content Editor, DigitalSports.com

Below the stories you will find two video players with highlights and interviews from both games.

GAME 1
No. 5 Oakton 49, Robinson 32

No. 5 Oakton will attempt to win its fourth consecutive Concorde District championship and eighth in the past 11 years on Friday night after defeating host Robinson, 49-32, in the semifinal round Wednesday night.

The Cougars were lea by senior Jackie Shewmaker and junior Erin McGartland, who scored 14 points a piece.

Shewmaker “is absolutely fearless,” said Oakton Coach Fred Priester, in his 14th season. “She is savvy and, being a senior, she has been in these big situations before and she understands what she needs to do. If you relax on Erin [McGartland] she will figure out a way. She is a game-player and doesn’t get a lot of respect around the region, but I love having her on my team.”

Senior guard Mandy Johnston added 11 points for the Cougars and junior forward Brianna Johnson had six.

Robinson entered the semifinal coming off of a 21-point blow out of Chantilly on Tuesday. Senior forward Katherine Yount paced the Rams with a game-high 17 points, 15 of which came in the second half, but got little help offensively from her teammates. Yount accounted for all but two of Robinson’s second-half field goals and scored all six of its fourth-quarter points. Junior guard Katelyn Priftis added seven for for the Rams.

GAME 2

Herndon 36, No. 6 Centreville 31

Herndon used the suffocating defense and three-point bombs of senior guard Emily Baumgartner to up-end No. 6 Centreville, 36-31, to earn a berth into Friday’s Concorde District championship game.

Baumgartner had the unenviable task of covering all-district senior guard Chelsea Dunn, but not only did she hold Dunn to just four points, she also hit four times
from beyond the arc to lead her team with a game-high 14 points.

The Hornets got buckets from eight different players — including six from sophomore forward Alexis Lewis — and four each from sophomore Jasmine Johnson and senior Lesley Buckingham.

“They
haven’t done anything they aren’t capable of doing,” said Herndon oach Reggie Barnes. “They finally believe in one another and believe
in the coaching staff. They really are laying it on the line.”

Centreville struggled all night on the offensive end of the floor, and failed to reach double-digits in points in any quarter. Senior Ashley Warhurst led the Wildcats with 13 points, scoring nine of her team’s 16 first-half points. Junior Victoria Marvin added six.

Herndon will play top-seeded Oakton in Fridays finale at 6 p.m. at Robinson.

Girls’ Basketball: No. 6 Oakton 42, No.5 Centreville 40 (OT)

By Jimmy Thomas
Content Editor, DigitalSports.com

Check below for complete video highlights

Baskets were hard to come by Friday night in what turned out to be the Concorde District regular-season championship game between Oakton and Centreville. Both teams entered the match-up with identical, 10-1 records in district play with the Wildcats only loss coming to this same Cougar team.

This game — much like the last — was highlighted by team defense and big shots as Oakton defeated Centreville, 42-40, in overtime.

With a minute remaining in the third quarter it looked as if the momentum had finally swung in favor of the Wildcats. Centreville junior Vicotoria Marvin (10 points, including 5-of-6 from the fou line) broke free after catching a pass from senior Ashley Warhurst (eight points) and laid it in to give her team a five-point advantage.

Oakton answered as junior Erin McGartland scored the next five points to tie the game at 34 with 1 minute, 34 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. But Oakton got the defensive stop it needed and took the lead on two free throws by senior Jackie Shewmaker, which were her only points of the night.

With just :30 left on the clock and down two, Centreville put the ball in the hands of senior Chelsea Dunn. Dunn flashed to the basket and scored two of her 12 points, pushing the game to overtime tied at 36. In the extra period the game was tied once again with just :47 to play and the Cougars electing to take the last shot.

McGartland, who scored a game-high 14 points, drove the lane and hit a short runner only that left 1.3 seconds on the clock. Dunn heaved a last-second shot that nearly went in, but it did not.

With the victory, the Cougars secured the top seed — and a bye — in the Concorde District tournament that begins Tuesday.  Centreville, meanwhile, finished as the No. 2 seed and, similarly, will play at home on Wednesday.

Robinson’s Boys Win Sixth-Straight Virginia AAA Swim & Dive Championship

By Sam Dowell
Fairfax High Senior

(Look below the story for dozens of video highlights and interviews from Saturday’s championship meet.)

On an evening full of record-setting performances, it was Robinson Coach Rich Gordon who took the last swim of the night after celebrating the most unprecedented record of all: The Rams’ boys team, led by seniors Derek Bui and Tim Wingert, won their sixth consecutive Virginia AAA state title.

To put that in perspective, it means that Gordon’s teams have won the championship every year since his seniors were in the sixth grade.

“Six straight championships is amazing to say,” Gordon said incredulously after reality was finally setting in.

This championship was just as important to the swimmers as it was to their coach.

“I was the two-time defending state champion in the 100-breaststroke and I just wanted to contribute to this team as a senior and as one of the captains,” said Bui, who won that event for the third consecutive time, tying the state record that Thomas Jefferson’s Jonathan Christensen set in the preliminary round.

In all, there were a total of 18 state records tied or broken out of the 24 events, 16 of which were set by Northern Region athletes or teams.

Wingert and Lake Braddock’s Ashley Danner were the only two swimmers to be a part of three state records this year.

“Getting three state records is amazing,” Danner said. “I was really proud of both my individual events. I did what I wanted to do – get the records.”

Fairfax’s girls’ team also shined. Highlighted by two state record-breaking relays in the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle, the Rebels high quantity of stellar swimmers led to a first-place team finish.

“We knew we could get it,” said Fairfax senior Emily Ferguson, who competed in four races for the Rebels, including serving as the anchor on that 200-yard medley relay team. “We really wanted it. We knew we had tough competition, but we just had to go out there, swim fast and set the tone for all the other meets.”
