Gymnastics: Concorde District Championships

By Angela Watts
DigitalSports.com

(Look below the story for dozens of video highlights from Thursday’s meet.)

It looked for much of Thursday night’s Concorde District gymnastics championships at Centreville High that everyone in the room had a split-personality.

Herndon coach Keith Naquin, whose wife, Maureen, is Chantilly’s head coach, wore a Charger purple long-sleeve turtle neck under his Hornet red T-shirt.

And then there was a top W.T. Woodson assistant coach, whose team competed at the Liberty District meet earlier in the week, assisting two different teams Thursday night, wearing a long-sleeve Oakton T-Shirt over top of a short-sleeve Fairfax one. She shed her top layer depending on which team was on an event.

Even meet favorites Chantilly and Herndon, who train together during the regular-season, got in on the action. When they arrived at Centreville for warm-ups there was a large sign strung across the back of the gym to welcome each of the league’s seven gymnastics teams. But the Charger and Hornet gymnasts did a little re-arranging, combining their two signs into one that read, simply, “HERNTILLY.”

And when Crank That by Soulja Boy came blazing over the speakers while all seven teams were cleaning up in preparation for the post-meet awards ceremony, nearly every gymnast in the place was instantly converted into a hip-hop dancer. A few minutes later — when the equipment was all put away — it came as no surprise when a quick version of Cotten-Eyed Joe turned them all into country line dancers instead.

It seemed the only person whose identity never wavered Thursday was Herndon sophomore sensation Maria Hayden, who earned a first-place medal on each of the four event apparatus en route to a convincing win in the all-around competition. The only individual to share any of those honors was Chantilly junior Elly Taura, who tied Hayden on the vault.

“It’s a really good feeling,” said Hayden, who repeated as the bars, floor and all-around champion but won her first titles on the beam and vault. “I was really happy because last meet was not my best meet, and so it’s really good to come back strong from that.”

Hayden’s solid performance — and quality scores by the Hornets’ Alana Henderson and Lauren Sullivan — also helped lead Herndon to its second consecutive team crown. And considering both the history of the district meet and the fact that Hayden is an underclassman, it seems reasonable to go ahead and pencil the Hornets in as the favorite for next season as well.

Since 1998, every winner of the Concorde District meet has successfully completed a three-peat before relinquishing the title. Chantilly started the trend with a three year sweep from 1998-2000, Centreville took over the reigns from 2001-03 and Oakton took its turn from 2004-06.

“This was a really big team effort for us,” Hayden said. “We were all cheering each other on because we wanted this so bad. We wanted to repeat our championship from last year.”

Girls’ Basketball: No. 5 Oakton 43, No. 6 Centreville 36

By Phil Murphy
DigitalSports.com

(Look below the story for interviews and dozens of video highlights from Tuesday’s game.)

In a match-up of one-loss Concorde District rivals in Vienna on Tuesday night, No. 5 Oakton held the advantage for all but :55 seconds in its 43-36 win over No. 6 Centreville.

The first half featured scoring statistics that, at first glance, would suggest boring play. However, despite the minuscule 6-4 and 17-10 score lines after the first and second quarters, respectively, the atmosphere was intense. The low tallies, instead, were much more a credit to stringent defense than inadequate offense.

“It was kind of hard to run our offense against [Oakton],” said Wildcat forward Victoria Marvin, who scored a team-high 10 points. “They had a really good defense. Our slow transitions didn’t really work out.”

Both teams are known for employing an offensive strategy that consists of continual ball movement and attempting only high-percentage shots — they connected on only three combined three-pointers — so a low-scoring affair was expected.

“Oakton’s offense is controlled, so as a player it’s not much a change for me,” Cougar guard Erin McGartland said after her game-high, 15-point performance. “I like doing that because you know where to go and what to do. I like how it kept the game at an even pace the whole game.

“It worked out for us pretty well.”

McGartland scored the first five points of the contest and Oakton (15-1 overall, 6-0 Concorde District) — despite having just three players make field goals — only relinquished the lead, briefly, on two occasions.

In the second quarter, the Cougars trailed 10-9 for 24 seconds before a lay-up by senior Jackie Shewmaker (12 points) helped them regain a one-point advantage. And, with 2 minutes, 9 seconds remaining in the fourth, Marvin tied the game at 35 with a fast break lay-in. But, with 1:38 to play, McGartland nailed what ultimately proved the game-winning jumper from the top of the key to put the Cougars ahead for good, 37-35.

“I got a screen from Brianna Johnson, got the ball and looked to shoot it,” McGartland said. “I was open, I shot it and I scored.”

For Oakton, it marked the team’s 12th consecutive victory since a 66-64 loss to No. 3 Madison on Dec. 7, the fifth straight season in which it has boasted a winning streak of at least 12 games. Centreville (12-2, 5-1) had its own 12-game run snapped in Tuesday’s setback. The Wildcats’ only other loss of the season came at the hands of the very same Warhawks, 68-64, just three days prior to the Cougars’ lone defeat.

Bulldog Wrestlers Sweep Wildcats and Cougars in District Dual Meet

By Jessica Lloyd
Westfield High Senior

Westfield’s wrestling team hosted Centreville and Oakton High Schools Wednesday night in its first Concorde District dual meet of the season — and the Bulldogs couldn’t have fared any better.

Westfield not only beat both Centreville and Oakton — it held both of its opponents scoreless.

The Bulldog’s first match ended in a 76heavyweight-0 shutout of the Cougars, winning all 14 individual matches. Westfield totaled seven pins, and the Cougars forfeited three matches. The record pin time for the night was made by Greg Bush at 189 pounds, who overwhelmed his opponent in just :53 seconds.

Westfield’s second match ended with a similar result, a 60-0 shutout of Centreville. But this pairing featured some intense match-ups. Westfield managed only two pins, one of which was made by senior Jake Carey at 145 pounds, who pinned both his opponents Wednesday night. Centreville, meanwhile, also forfeited three matches.

The highlight of the night was a narrow, 6-5 victory at 171 pounds by Westfield’s Austin Fallon. Bulldog Jeremy Ryan ended the night with a convincing, 18-0 win at 102 pounds, which proved the largest point difference of the night.

Girls’ Basketball: Oakton 54, Chantilly 46

By Jimmy Thomas
DigitalSports.com

Oakton began its game Monday night against rival Chantilly by going on a 10-0 run, and the Cougars held that margin through most of the game to defeat the visiting Chargers, 54-46, to remain undefeated in Concorde District play.

“It means a lot,” fresham sensation Zora Stephenson said of her teams’ hot start. “A win is a win. Every game is a new game and you can’t dwell on the past.”

Stephenson poured in 14 points on the night, hitting four three-pointers along the way.

Chantilly, led by junior guard Lisa Comerford and senior guard Lauren Gural, put constant pressure on the Oakton defense, but proved unable to pull any closer than five points. Comerford led the Chargers (7-4, 1-2) with a game-high 20 points, while Gural added 10.

The Cougars (12-1, 3-0) spread the ball around all night and effectively used the inside-out game, led by guard Erin McGartland and senior guard Mandy Johnston, who scored 12 and eight points, respectively.

“We were really well prepared,” Oakton senior captain Jackie Shewmaker said. “We had a good scouting report on Chantilly. We had a lot of new stuff we put in. We ran it really well and everyone did really good.”

Oakton will try to continue its winning ways Thursday night at Herndon; Chantilly also plays Thursday against visiting Robinson.
