2009 All-Beltway: Bradley Phillips

Bradley Phillips, Oakton, Junior

2009 All-Beltway Boys Swimming First Team

Oakton junior Bradley Phillips’ name littered the results pages at the Northern Region and Virginia AAA state meets in February. He won both the district, region and state 200-yard freestyle, with an automatic All-American time of 1:40.62 at States. In the region race, he set a Northern Region record at 1:40.02. In the state race, he made the final turn in third place trailing by over a quarter-of-a-second, but made up three-tenths in the final 50 meters.

At the Concorde District meet, Phillips set a district record in the 500-yard freestyle, swimming at 4:31.33. He finished second in that event the Northern Region and state meets, but had the second-fastest regional time ever and the third-fastest time in Virginia AAA history, 4:30.89. The latter was another automatic All-American time.

Phillips was the first leg of the Northern Region championship 400-yard freestyle relay team, which set a regional record (3:07.28) and was a pivotal event in the Cougars’ successful quest to capture the regional crown. Oakton’s win ended a six-year streak of Northern Region championship for rival Robinson.
