The Mills Godwin girls soccer team keeps finding ways to win and the stakes keep getting bigger.
The Eagles advanced to the state Group AAA semifinals with a 1-0 hard-fought victory over a young, but very skilled Oakton team.
The game winner came in the second half with 29:43 left to go in the game.
The scoring sequence started with a throw-in deep in Oakton’s end. Kelsey Carter‘s long throw went near the top of the eighteen where Becca Haislip slipped the ball through to Sarah Bellotti, who was one on one with Oakton keeper, Erica Stein.
Bellotti stayed patient, took a touch, and finished past the diving Stein. Bellotti has tallied a goal in each of Godwin’s past three games.
Possession in the first half was dominated by Oakton. Godwin’s defense was busy and dodged several bullets.
“Oakton did a good job in the first half of changing formations,” said Eagles head coach Ali Toole. “Once we got to halftime and talked about it, we adjusted so much better in the second half.”
Godwin’s best chance in the first half came as Stein charged out on a long through ball to the Eagles’ Marie Krider. Krider touched the ball toward the right sideline and had an open net, but could not get a shot off as Oakton defenders quickly recovered.
Possession was much more even in the second half as Godwin midfielder and Central Region Co-Player of the Year, Anne Lumpkin, began to assert herself. Lumpkin’s deft passing began to put steady pressure on the Oakton defense culminating in Godwin’s goal.
Following the Godwin goal, the Eagles did not sit back. They became much more aggressive, dominated possession, and had Oakton in danger several times but then lightning struck – literally. A lightning delay of about 30 minutes sent the teams to the locker room with about 17:00 remaining.
Toole and assistant Miranda Watson both felt the delay hurt the Eagles and gave Oakton a chance to regroup.
“We had them on the run and felt like we were going to score again,” said Watson.
After play resumed, Oakton pushed forward aggressively and created tense moments, only a step away from scoring several times. Godwin’s stout defense cleared the ball over and over in the last four minutes.
The back line was bolstered by freshman Maggie Lumpkin, who filled in for regular starter Anna Boyce who missed Friday’s region final vs. Atlee due to illness. Boyce played most of the first half, but could not continue.
Maggie Lumpkin, Anne Lumpkin’s cousin, made several solid plays in the second half resulting in no letdown in the quality of the defense.
Godwin advances to face Beach power Frank Cox, a 3-1 overtime winner over Forest Park. The two teams meet at 4:00 p.m. Friday at Westfield High School in Northern Virginia.
“These girls are all contributing and they all believe. That’s the thing you really can’t coach – they all believe. And that’s what’s making us special,” said Toole.
