Hi! This is Angela and I’ll be blogging live from the Siegel Center at VCU in Richmond. Game is set to tip at 7 p.m.

Oakton and Princess Anne were just on the floor for an early shoot-around and have headed back to the locker room to pre-game preparations.

There are just under 4 minutes left until the starting lineup will be introduced … and the Cougar students — and parents — are making a strong showing. Oakton’s student section is filled with more than 200 gold-and-maroon clad fans, and there are more arriving as I type.

The two teams are finishing up with their pre-game drills. Oakton is dressed in their home white uniforms while Princess Anne is decked out in its road red.

An Oakton junior, Michelle, is about to sing the National Anthem. I didn’t catch her last name, but she did a nice job in front of his packed crowd.

Starting for the Eastern Region champion Cavaliers (30-1) are junior guard Samisha Powell, junior guard Courtney Braxton, freshman forward Bria Powell, senior forward Dontranika Horton and sophomore center Elizabeth Williams.

Starting for the Northern Region champion Cougars (30-0) are freshman guard Caroline Coyer, senior guard Sasha Borojeni, senior forward Brianna Johnson, sophomore guard Zora Stephenson and senior forward Erin McGartland.

1st Quarter

Princess Anne takes the opening tip but it’s the Cougars who strike first on a baseline three-pointer by McGartland that fired up the Oakton crowd.

Horton hits a mid-range jumper and it’s 3-2 Oakton with 5:50 left in the quarter. Another Horton jumper and the Cavaliers lead, 4-3.

Williams makes a nice move to the basket and Princess Anne has scored six straight points.

McGartland gets a big steal but the Cougars fail to convert and it’s Cavaliers’ ball with 3:50 to play. Gorham hits the jumper and Princess Anne leads 8-3.

McGarland answers with her second three of the game, however, to close within 8-6 with 3:19 to go.

Stephenson layup and it’s tied at 8 with just over three minutes remaining.

Powell answers with a three of her own to put the Cavaliers back on top, 11-8. Not for long.

McGartland’s third three-pointer again knots the score at 11.

Powell again drives the lane and hits a short jumper — and draws the foul.

TV time out on the floor before her free throw attempt.

The teams are back out on the floor and Powell is at the line. It’s good and Princess Anne leads, 14-11, at the 2:20 mark.

Cougars turn the ball over and the Cavaliers make them pay on a rebound and putback by the 6-feet-3-inch Williams.

A foul on Katherine Coyer sends Horton to the line to shoot a pair. Good. This one bounces out and Princess Anne leads, 17-11.

Horton is fouled again — this time by Stephenson — and she’s back at the foul line with :23.3 remaining in the opening quarter. Again she hits one-of-two and the Cavaliers lead, 18-11.

Johnson with a strong drive to the basket and it’s 18-13 at the end of the first period.

2nd Quarter

NOTE: Oakton is attempting to become the first Northern Region girls’ team to win a state championship since Kara Lawson led West Springfield to the title in 1999. Lawson, who went on to star at the University of Tennessee and is now a television analyst, scored a Class AAA record 47 points in that finale.

Stephenson rebounds her own missed shot and puts it back up for two and it’s 18-15.

Powell with a long jumper and it’s 20-15 with 6:53 to play in the half.

Make that 23-15 after another Powell three-pointer from the left wing and Oakton Coach Fred Priester wants a time out with 6:38 on the clock.

Johnson made a beautiful pass to Stephenson but she failed to covert … but Caroline Coyer ties it up on the other end of the floor. Possession stays with Princess Anne.

Cavaliers miss a three; Borojeni doesn’t. She hits her first long ball to pull Oakton within 23-18 at the 4:59 mark.

Now it’s Princess Anne Coach Darnell Dozier who wants to talk it over. Time out Cavaliers.

The two teams each had an offensive possession but neither converted and we’ve got a TV time out with 4:00 left in the half.

We’re back in action and a McGartland rebound gives possession to the Cougars. But Powell makes a steal and converts on the other end for a 25-18 Princess Anne lead.

Another Cavalier layup — this one by Jazmen Boone — and at 27-18 Oakton calls another time out.

McGartland nails her fourth three-pointer, this one from the right wing, and it’s 27-21 with 2:00 to play. The shot prompts the Oakton crowd to chant, “We love Erin!”

Powell jumper; Borojeni three and it’s 29-24 and the chant has switched to, “We love Sasha!”

Borojeni drains her second straight three from the same spot on the right baseline and it’s 29-27 with 1:07 left in the half.

Time out Princess Anne.

A Powell three-pointer makes it’s 32-27 with less than a minute remaining.

Stephenson tries to get in on the action, but her three goes in-and-back-out. But the Cougars retain possession and Katherine Coyer is fouled. She’s at the line shooting two.

The first is up-and-in. So is the second and it’s 32-29 with :26 to play.

Natasha Gorham hits her first from behind the arch and it’s 35-29 with :01.2 showing on the clock.

WOW. The Cavaliers, with the ball out of bounds and :01.2 remaining, make a quick pass to Powell and she banks in a three-pointer at the buzzer to give Princess Anne a 38-29 lead at half time.

NOTE: There were 12 total three-pointers scored in the first half, seven by the Cougars and five by the Cavaliers. Powell leads all scorers with 21 first-half points, while McGartland is pacing Oakton with 12 points and five rebounds.

3rd Quarter

A big block by Williams starts the third quarter and gives Princess Anne possession. Braxton drives the line for a wide open layup and the Cavaliers lead, 40-29.

But Stephenson answers with yet another three to pull Oakton within 40-32 with 6:39 remaining in the quarter.

That’s eight for the Cougars if you’re counting. The state record is nine … which Oakton tied during the state quarterfinals. So they’re looking to break their own mark.

Williams feeds Powell for a fast break layup and the margin has been pushed back to double-digits, 42-32, with 4:29 to go.

Time out Oakton.

Princess Anne is slowing the pass on offense in an attempt to milk the big lead, but the Cavaliers fail to convert and it’s Borojeni who draws a foul at the other end of the floor.

TV time out before Borojeni shoots.

She hits the pair and it’s 42-34 with 3:45 to play in the quarter.

Caroline Coyer forces a turnover and the Cougars are back in possession. McGartland makes a move to the basket and also picks up a foul. She splits ’em and it’s 42-35 with 2:41 to play.

Williams gets the bucket-and-one and Princess Anne’s lead is back to 10 points.

That’s until McGartland drains her fifth three — the team’s ninth — and it’s 45-38 with 2:13 to play.

Caroline Coyer hits another three — breaking the state record with 10 and counting — and it’s 45-41 with 1:49 on the clock.

Stephenson draws a foul and is at the line. She misses the first. Hits the second. It’s a three-point game with Princess Anne leading, 45-42.

Oakton is holding for the last shot of the quarter … Caroline Coyer makes a move to the basket and draws a foul with :07.7 on the clock. Good. Good again and it’s 45-44.

Powell makes an attempt at the buzzer but the ball rolls off the front of the rim and we have ourselves a ball game.

End of third quarter: Princess Anne 45, Oakton 44.

4th Quarter

Princess Anne turns it over to start the fourth and Caroline Coyer is bringing it up the court. But the Cougars miss and it’s Williams who scores on the other end.

Katherine Coyer answers with a three-pointer — that’s No. 11 for the team — and it’s tied at 47 with 6:56 to play.

Time out Cavaliers with 6:06 remaining.

Williams goes off-the-glass to put Princess Anne back on top, 49-47 at the 5:17 mark.

Borojeni three from the left wing — that’s No. 12 — and Oakton leads 50-49.

Boone jumper and the lead has changed again: It’s 51-50 Princess Anne.

Make that 53-50 after a fast break layup by Powell, who was also fouled on the play. She’s at the line shooting one. It’s good and the Cavaliers lead, 54-50, with 4:01 to go.

Stephenson for three — lucky No. 13 — and it’s 54-53 with 3:39 remaining.

Williams is fouled by McGartland and there is a TV time out with 3:30 remaining before she steps to the line.

Williams’ first foul shot is good. So is the second and Princess Anne leads, 56-53.

McGartland was diving for a loose ball and trying to tie it up but was instead whistled for her second foul. That sends Bria Powell to the line to shoot a one-and-one. She misses it but Boone gets the rebound and the basket to extend the Cavaliers’ lead to 58-53.

Caroline Coyer is fouled at the other end and will shoot two. She nails both and it’s 58-55 Princess Anne with 2:33 to play.

Samisha Powell — who is the Powell referenced in every play other than the one above — banks on in and it’s 60-55.

Caroline Coyer is back at the line shooting a pair. She hits the first and misses the second and it’s 60-56.

Boone dishes to Williams for a layup and Princess Anne leads 62-56. And after an offensive miss by the Cougars it’s Powell who scores a driving layup on the other end and it’s 64-56 with 1:13 remaining.

Oakton misses again and it’s Williams at the line shooting a one-and-one. Good. Good again and it’s 66-56.

McGartland heads to the foul line with :59.9 left in this state finale. She hits the first — her 17th point of the game — and adds her team-high 18th as well.

Princess Anne leads 66-58 with :58.9 to play and Oakton has sent Powell to the line. She already has a game-high 30 points. Now she has 32 and it’s 68-58 as time is winding down on Oakton.

Borojeni picks up her fifth foul while sending Bria Powell back to the line. She hits one-of-two and it’s 69-58 with :39 to play.

Caroline Coyer does the fouling this time and sends Samisha Powell to the line to shoot a pair with :18.7 remaining. She hits the first.

Oakton clears its bench and there is a standing ovation as the Cougars’ starters come to the bench.

Powell hits the second free throw as well.

Oakton senior Jenna Cahill — one of the late-game substitutions by the Cougars — banks in a three from the top of the key and that’s No. 14 on the night.

But it’s still a 10-point lead for the Cavaliers at 71-61 with :01.9 left.

Princess Anne is celebrating its 7-161 victory at mid-court … but the Cougar faithful are still proudly chanting “Oakton Cougars” from their seats and their players gather at the team bench.

The two teams are shaking hands … and the trophy presentation is about to begin.

Oakton’s remarkable season ends at 30-1.

Girls’ Basketball: Oakton Advances to Virginia AAA Title Game

By Angela Watts
Assistant GM, Washington D.C. Metro Area

** Check back tonight for a full photo gallery and post-game interviews with Coach Fred Priester, Erin McGartland, Zora Stephenson and Caroline Coyer!

Hi! This is Angela and I’m blogging live from the Siegel Center at VCU in Richmond. The game between Oakton (29-0) and Lake Taylor (25-2) was supposed to tip at 2 p.m. … but the Group AA Division 4 boys’ semifinal between Hidden Valley and Salem is now in double-overtime.

And it’s a two-point game with :53.7 seconds to play.

So neither the Titans nor the Cougars have even taken the floor for warm-ups yet.

But it’s about to be over. Salem has extended its lead to six points with :08.7 left … and it’s over. Salem wins 60-54 in double overtime.

Oakton and Lake Taylor are not both on the floor … 19 minutes on the clock for warm-ups. I’m going to snap some photos. But check back up updates once the game starts!

1st Quarter

Oakton wins the opening tip but misses on its first attempt and is back on defense. Titans lead 1-0 on a free throw but neither team has scored a field goal yet and we’re 2 minutes in.

I spoke too soon. Oakton senior Sasha Borojeni and sophomore Zora Stephenson drain back-to-back three-pointers and the Cougars lead 6-1 with 5:39 to play.

Time out Lake Taylor.

Titans get their first field goal on a putback by Toia Giggets and it’s 6-3. Bucket Stephenson and Oakton leads 8-3 at the 4:53 mark.

Whew. Here’s the trouble with live blogging: sometimes the internet goes down. Let me catch up you with the score first — Oakton leads 15-13 at the end of the first quarter.

Now, here’s how they got there: The Titans got a couple of layups inside by Giggets, while the Cougars countered with a layup by senior Erin McGartland, a jumper by freshman Caroline Coyer and a three-pointer just before the horn by her twin sister, Katherine Coyer.

2nd Quarter

Giggets again on a putback and it’s tied at 15.

Stephenson three-pointer from the left wing and make it 18-15 with 6:33 to play. Layup by Lake Taylor’s Anequa Vines and it’s 18-17.

Caroline Coyer with another three from the left baseline and it’s 21-17. She shot the ball about a two feet away from where I’m sitting on press row. Beautiful shot. Knew it was good as soon as she released it.

Giggets with another offensive rebound and putback and the Cougars’ lead is cut to 21-19 at the 5:39 mark.

Vines on the rebound and putback to tie the score at 21 and Oakton Coach Fred Priester wants to talk about it — and probably get on his girls about allowing the Titans too many second-chance shots on offense. Time out Cougars with 5:25 to play.

Giggest picks up her first foul and sends senior Brianna Johnson to the foul line. She hits one of two for a 22-21 advantage.

McGartland gets fouled driving to the basket and that’s two on Giggets in less than a minute of play.

Oakton gets a big defensive rebound — and earns a loud cheer from its student section, which is dressed mostly in gold and standing to cheer.

Giggets again on a sweep pass from Breshara Gordon and Titans lead 23-22 with 2:53 to play. But Stephenson answers with a pull-up jump shot to put the Cougars back on top, 24-23.

McGartland nails a short baseline jumper for a 26-23 lead

Time out Lake Taylor with 2:23 remaining in the first half.

Giggets this time dumps it off to Tasia Majors for a layup … but again Stephenson answers with a three-pointer on the other end. Oakton leads 29-25 with 1:06 to play.

Lake Taylor’s Marhyah Stephenson hits a rare jump shot for the Titans to close within 29-27.

Giggets picks up her third foul of the game with :23.1 left in the first half and Caroline Coyer is shooting two free throws. Hits the first. Misses the second.

Buzzer sounds and Oakton heads to the locker room holding a 30-27 lead.

NOTE: As you can see from the link above, I’ve added some photos from warm-ups. I’ll have more than a hundred more to add after the game ends … but, unfortunately, there won’t be many video highlights from today’s game. With the spring sports season officially opening tonight, Phil Murphy stayed in Fairfax to cover a big girls’ and boys’ soccer doubleheader tonight between W.T. Woodson and Robinson. And we decided that with an afternoon start fans would be more interested in the live blog than highlights after the fact. Hope we made the right call! (Actually, I’m hoping that Stephen Lewis of DigitalSports Richmond arrives soon to cover the next game so that I can give him my camera and beg for help.)

3rd Quarter

Johnson gets the roll on a short jumper to start the third and it’s 32-27 Oakton. McGartland then hits two free throws to extend the lead to 34-27.

Lake Taylor’s Linda Stephney just returned the favor with two free throws of her own and it’s 34-29 with 7:06 to play.

Stepney hits a jumper; Katherine Coyer counters but then the Titans come right back down the court and Majors hits a three-pointer to narrow Oakton’s lead to 36-34.

McGartland nails two more free throws and it’s 38-34 at the 5:39 mark.

Zora Stephenson with a big block that drew some ooh’s and aah’s from the crowd. Still Titan ball, however. Gordan hits a three and it’s a one-point Cougar lead.

Until Caroline Coyer hits a short jump shot, that is. Now it’s 40-37.

Vines with a layup and the margin is back to 40-39.

McGartland steal and basket gets the crowd going again. Time out Lake Taylor with 3:52 remaining in the third quarter.

Zora Stephenson layup on a pretty pass from Johnson but Titan Jasmine Cuffee answers with a layup of her own and it’s 44-41 Oakton.

Zora Stephenson layup — and-one. The Cougar faithful love it. It’s 46-41 Oakton with 2:24 to play.

Katherine Coyer draws a foul and she’s at the line with 1:50 showing. First one is good. Second one isn’t. It’s 47-41 Cougars.

Stepney putback makes it 47-43. Stepney is driving again and this time she’s fouled. Lake Taylor has the ball.

McGartland steal … and she takes a hard foul on the other end that knocks her to the floor. She’s at the line, shooting two. Good. Good again. Oakton leads 49-43.

Caroline Coyer mid-range jumper makes it 51-43 with :36.5 left in the quarter … and the Cougars have the ball again. They fail to convert and that’s the end of the period.

4th Quarter

The fourth has started and Oakton is just seven minutes away from earning a berth in the Virginia AAA state championship.

Caroline Coyer is at the line — the Cougars are in the bonus — with 7:14 to play. First is good. Again, the second one isn’t. Oakton leads 52-43.

Marhyah Stephenson with a three closes the gap to 52-46.

Caroline Coyer steal and feeds McGartland for an easy layup to give the Cougars a 54-46 lead with 5:53 remaining.

McGartland goes high off-the-glass for a layup and draws the foul. She’s off at the line, however, and it’s 56-46.

Stepney layup takes the lead back to single-digits.

McGartland layup; but Stepney answers with a three-pointer. Zora Stephenson then hits a layup and draws a foul. She’s at the line with 4:51 to play. Foul shot is good and it’s 61-51.

Stepney is fouled by Johnson and she’s shooting two. Misses the first. Makes the second.

Stepney steal and dishes to Cuffee for a layup and it’s 61-54 with 4:07 showing on the clock.

Time out Oakton.

And-one again for McGartland and Oakton, ahead 63-54, is in the double bonus. They’ll shoot two free throws the rest of the way.

Cuffee is at the line — the Titans are in the bonus now as well — and she hits both to narrow the Cougars’ lead to 63-56 at the 3:13 mark.

It’s Borojeni’s turn at the foul line. The first is up-and-in. So is the second. Oakton leads 65-56 with 2:26 to play.

Vines with a putback. The Cougars are working the clock. Titans foul Borojeni again to stop the clock with 2:04 to play. She hits both and it’s 67-58.

Cuffee drives the middle of the lane for a bucket to pull within 67-60. Lake Taylor takes a time out with 1:55 remaining.

Cougars are working the clock again … until Gordon comes up with a steal and a layup and it’s 67-62.

Caroline Coyer sees an opening and drives the lane for a basket.

Time out Cougars.

McGartland has the ball in her hands and there is less than a minute to play. Oakton turnover — fans don’t like the call — but there is just :29.4 remaining.

Zora Stephenson comes up with a big rebound … and the Cougar fans are on their feet.

Katherine Coyer is at the line with :11.9 to play. Shots are good and it’s 71-62. The Cougar students are chanting “un-de-feated!”

It’s over. Oakton wins 71-62 and advances to the Virginia AAA state championship game, which will be played at 7 p.m. Friday at VCU. The Cougars will face the winner of tonight’s game between Cosby and Princess Anne in the title game.

Oakton           15  15  21  20 — 71
Lake Taylor     13  14  16  19 — 62

Oakton — McGartland 7 6-8 20; Stephenson 11 1-2 20; C. Coyer 6 2-4 13; K. Coyer 3 3-4 8; Borojeni 2 4-4 7; Johnson 1 1-2 3. Team totals: 30 17-24 71. Lake Taylor — Stepney 5 6-8 15; Giggets 6 0-0 12; Cuffee 4 2-3 10; Vines 4 0-0 8; Gordon 4 0-0 7; Majors 3 0-0 5; Stephenson 3 0-0 5. Team totals: 29 8-11 62. Rebounds — Oakton 28 (McGartland 9, Stephenson 6); Lake Taylor 45 (Giggets 10, Vines 9); Assists — Oakton 20 (C. Coyer 11); Lake Taylor 11 (Stepney 6).

Honorable Mentions (in no order):
H.E.L. Yeah!
— Lackey had a two-point lead in a 3A South quarterfinal against Potomac and the visiting Wolverines had possession, hoping
for the tie and overtime. But the ball is knocked loose, and Charger senior Rashad Beam drives in for the dunk. It came after the buzzer and didn’t count, but Beam scored
41 points to lead Lackey to victory.
Stone Passes — The Cougars clinched a second-consecutive 4A East championship with a 73-58 win over
Glen Burnie. State finalists a year ago, the Cougars have been here before, but
last year’s regional final was on the road, so why not storm the court?
Stone plays Wise in the 4A state semis on Thursday night at Comcast Center.
Waters is Wet — C.H. Flowers senior Brittney Waters sinks the
game-winning free throw with :05 seconds remaining to lift Flowers
over Wise, 62-61, in the 4A South semifinal on Thursday. It was also Waters’ 18th birthday.

**BONUS**
Richmond Top Five
:
No. 5 — McKie Steal Leads to Oop
No. 4 — Magic Wann
No. 3 — Maxwell Overhead to Raines
No. 2 — McKie to Victory
No. 1 — Evans … No Words

No. 10 — Cougars Popping, Not Stopping
Northern Region, Virginia — In its Virginia AAA State quarterfinal win over Atlee, 74-45, Oakton tied a AAA State tournament record with nine 3-pointers. The Cougars had eight through three quarters and only attempted two in the final period. They were 9-for-18 from long range for the game.

No. 9 — Up, Up and Golladay
Prince George’s County, Maryland — Puma guard David Golladay locked up the 4A South Region with this fast-break dunk, as Wise earned its first ever regional basketball title over Roosevelt, 71-58. In November, the Pumas beat the Raiders for the school’s first-ever regional football title, as well.

No. 8 — You Got Sarve-d
Loudoun County, Virginia — In the Group AA Division 4 State quarterfinals, Raider senior Kerry Sarver goes behind the back to sophomore Alissa Kain for a fluid, scoop finish as a part of Loudoun County’s 90-51 win over Courtland. The Raiders scored 30 points in the second quarter and 53 in the first half.

No. 7 — Kromah … Let Him Go
Prince George’s County, Maryland — After a missed Bulldog alley-oop, Raider senior Lasan Kromah takes off from the dotted line for a transition dunk with a defender on his back. More from Kromah and the 4A South semifinal further down.

No. 6 — Electric E.J.
Northern Region, Virginia — In a tight Northern Region final between T.C. Williams and Hayfield, Titan senior — and Northern Region Player of the Year — Ed Jenkins puts the game away with this drive to the basket and head-over-heels layup-and-one. Jenkins was named Tournament MVP as T.C. Williams won its third-straight regional championship.

No. 5 — SCREAMING Eagle   1  2
Montgomery County, Maryland — In the 3A West Region final, an 87-69 win for Seneca Valley over Paint Branch, Screaming Eagle sophomore Jordan Goodman hyped up the crowd with a pair of alley-oop finishes. He finished with 24 points and Seneca Valley faces unbeaten Lake Clifton in the 3A State semifinals at the Comcast Center on March 12.

No. 4 — Kromah Pretty Reverse
Prince George’s County, Maryland — Raider senior Lasan Kromah takes off from outside the paint for this must-see reverse layup in the 4A South semifinals. Kromah had 10 points in Roosevelt’s 64-60 win over Bowie, but four made it into the countdown.

No. 3 — Strong Armwood
Independent Priviate Schools — In the nationally-anticipated game between No. 3 Oak Hill and No. 6 Montrose Christian, Mustang forward Isaiah Armwood stood out. In the first half, Armwood had a block-slash-outlet pass to Terrence Ross for a fast-break jam and followed it with a put-back dunk of his own. But the Warriors (38-0) got the better of the score sheet, 69-63.

No. 2 — That’s ‘Ji
W.C.A.C., Va./Md./D.C. — In the W.C.A.C. championship game, DeMatha trailed Gonzaga by one point with 9.9 seconds remaining. But the Stags went the length of the court and junior Jerian Grant found senior Naji Hibbert under the game basket for the league-winning lay-in with 1.8 seconds left.

No. 1 — Olase-Wow
Montgomery County, Maryland — Springbrook senior Jamal Olasewere finishes on the fast break through a Walter Johnson would-be shot-blocker. Olasewere has led the Blue Devils to a perfect 25-0 record, a 35-game winning streak and into the 4A State semifinals.

Girls state quarters, 3/7: Atlee vs. Oakton, live blog!

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond
(804) 240-2191
slewis@digitalsports.com

What’s going on? It’s Stephen Lewis here live at Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax for the state Group AAA quarterfinals.

The girls are about to kickoff, Atlee (24-4) leaving Mechanicsville to face unbeaten Oakton (28-0). Just keep refreshing your page for updates!

First Period

Atlee gets possession off the tip. Tight defense from Oakton, but Britt Hill gets loose for the first two points of the contest.

Erin McGartland
scores off a nice inbounds play for Oakton to tie the contest. Then Caroline Coyer knifes through the lane for a 4-2 Oakton lead.

Sydney Henderson coast-to-coast, ties it at four, then bombs a 3-pointer from the top of the key and scores in transition. Atlee 9-8, with 3:52 to go.

Henderson is on fire, hitting another 3-pointer to force an Oakton timeout at 3:31. She has 10 points already. Atlee 12-8.

It continues! Henderson knocks in another trey. Atlee 15-8, 13 points for Henderson.

Pace of play picking up as Zora Stephenson bangs in a trey for Oakton. Atlee 15-11, 2:16 to go. Offensive foul nullifies another Henderson 3-pointer, giving McGartland’s 3-pointer a chance to cut the lead to one.

McGartland again, over Richelle Price for two. Uh-oh, Price just picked up her second foul at the end of the first period, as Henderson’s layup is too late. Oakton leads 16-15 going into the second period.

Second Period

Oakton’s Katherine Coyer gets to the line to start the period for Oakton. She hits the first free throw. And the second, Oakton 18-15.

Katherine and Caroline Coyer are freshmen twins that are very tough players. So is McGartland. Her stickback forces an Atlee timeout, 20-15 Oakton.

Taylor Henderson
, Sydney’s sister, cuts through the lane and is found by Taylor Ashcraft for Atlee’s first second period points. But Katherine Coyer answers, followed by a Price bucket. Oakton 22-19, 5:32.

Taylor is off early, she misses her first free-throw attempt. And the second. But Hill steals the ball from Oakton and finishes on the break with the foul. She hits nothing but net on the free throw, game tied at 22, until McGartland again gets on the offensive glass. Oakton 24-22, 4:33.

Weave action allows Caroline Coyer to bomb a 3-pointer, Oakton 27-24 with 3:44 left in the half.

In other news, Terrell Owens just signed with the Buffalo Bills. One year, $6.5 million.

Back to the action, as Caroline hits a short jumper. Oakton has its biggest lead, 29-24. Oakton’s defense is much tougher on Sydney Henderson, so Price gets loose on the baseline.

Caroline back to the line, strokes two free throws, nothing but twine. Oakton 31-26, two minutes to go.

Stephenson is left open on the left wing again, knocking in another trey. Oakton 34-26. Tori Eberle is giving Atlee some minutes, but her putback misses.

Katherine Coyer goes to the line now, the Cougars are living at the stripe. She hits both for a 10-point lead.

McGartland is Oakton’s MVP of the game so far. Her latest move, a clean strip of Price. She threw it down to Stephenson, who strokes a jumper. The bank is open for Taylor Henderson at the buzzer, but Atlee trails 38-28 at halftime. WHEW, my fingers are getting a little tired!

Wednesday at the Siegel Center at 3 p.m., the winner of this contest will face Lake Taylor, who downed Forest Park earlier Saturday.

Third Period

The half didn’t cool Zora Stephenson, she hits another 3-pointer. All of the Cougar girls can hit from the perimeter. Oakton 41-28.

Price is at the line for Atlee, she swishes the first and the second. Oakton by 11. Quick hands by Hill gets the steal and she finishes on the break from Sydney.

Sasha Borojeni gets in the book for Oakton, 42-32 lead.

Atlee’s looking tired on defense as Brianna Johnson waltzes down the lane for two. Oakton 44-32, 5:28 of the third. Caroline with a nifty layup for the Cougars. I think they’ll be good for a while with these two freshmen and the sophomore Stephenson.

Atlee turns the ball over, getting former U.Va. star and Atlee coach Anna Prillaman off the bench for a 30-second timeout. Oakton 46-32.

Richelle Price gets loose or two, then Sydney’s tight D forces a TO. Price puts it on spin cycle, two more. Oakton lead cut to 10.

Atlee’s not rebounding, as Borojeni strokes a 3-pointer on their third shot at the basket. Another offensive rebounds leads to a 3-pointer from Caroline. Oakton 52-36, 2:44.

Caroline Coyer, the Northern Region tournament MVP, hits another 3-pointer. Seems like Oakton has 25 treys already. Oakton 55-36, Atlee timeout.

Stephenson for another bonus shot, WOW. Oakton 58-37.

Atlee is dead tired. Everyone is walking back to the bench, hands high or on hips.

Fourth Period

Sydney Henderson hits two free throws, lead down to 19. Raiders show pressure, Oakton breaks it but Price blocks McGartland’s shot. Atlee’s showing some energy, but it may be too late.

McGartland again, driving the lane and scores with the foul. She’s a 5-8 senior, tough today. She completes the three-point play, Oakton 61-39.

Oakton scores again 63-39. The Cougars are one 3-pointer away from tying the state tournament record in a game of nine.

Beautiful outlet from Price to Sydney to Hill for two. Lead by 20 for Oakton.

Borojeni’s would-be 3-pointer bounces out. Timeout Cougars, 3:16.

Stephenson steps inside the 3-point line, scoring from McGartland.

McGartland just twisted in ankle, not good for the Cougars. She’s sucking it up and stays in, she’s a senior. Doesn’t want to waste any more moments.

McGartland (16 points, 14 rebounds, five assists) goes out to a standing ovation minutes later as the game is in hand for Oakton, 69-45.

Sydney Henderson fouls out, ending a spectacular Raider career. She’ll play in college, look for an announcement soon!

Reserves for both teams are getting some state tournament time. Marisa Mahony ties the 3-point record at the buzzer! Oakton wins 74-45.

Atlee     15 13  9   8 – 45

Girls’ Basketball: Oakton Wins Northern Region Championship

By Angela Watts
Assistant GM, Washington D.C. Metro Area

** Click the links above to access a full photo gallery and dozens of video highlights from the championship game!

There were two drastically different — but equally indelible — images from No. 3 Oakton’s 74-66 victory over No. 7 T.C. Williams in the Northern Region championship game Tuesday night at Robinson.

The first was of the elated Cougars, who after cutting down the net stood in a circle at mid-court with each player and coach firmly holding a piece of the prize.

This is Oakton’s tradition. And it is representative of the kind of unity that has enabled this team to build a perfect, 28-0 record this season.

But the other image that helped define this championship was that of T.C. Williams standout Tierra Ruffin-Pratt down on her right knee and clutching her left shoulder with 5 minutes, 33 seconds left in the first half.

Ruffin-Pratt, who is widely regarded as the nation’s top guard, re-injured the shoulder that she dislocated in last year’s Patriot District title game and was forced to watch the rest of the game from the bench.

“She said she’s okay, but that’s how Tee is … she’s always okay,” Titan Coach Cavanaugh Hagen said of the North Carolina-bound star. “You have to rip her off the court to take her out of a game.

“She did look at me like she wanted to go [back] in, but I knew her status: She couldn’t go in. She couldn’t take that risk.”

And her absence greatly effected both teams.

T.C. Williams, led by Ruffin-Pratt’s 10-point, first-quarter performance, led 18-9 at the end of the first quarter and was ahead 18-12 when she went out. Perhaps even more importantly, Ruffin-Pratt defensively was assigned to Oakton standout freshman guard Caroline Coyer. Coyer was scoreless while matched against Ruffin-Pratt, but exploded for a game-high 21 points in the final two-and-a-half quarters of play.

“I would be remiss if I didn’t say that it was obviously a huge loss for them to lose Tierra in the first half,” Oakton Coach Fred Priester said. “And what we did was we just made adjustments to run some things that we wouldn’t necessarily have run if she were there.”

As a result, Ruffin-Pratt’s absence, in some ways, tainted the victory.

“You’d rather beat people when they’re at their best,” Priester said. “And I know [assistant coach Chris] Kestyn even said, ‘This doesn’t feel quite as good as it could have felt.’

“And she’s such a great kid and this has been now three years running she’s been hurt in the region tournament. And one of the things I had in the back of my mind was that if it didn’t work out for us … there would be some poetic justice for her to go out a winner.

“But, you know, I could get all philosophical and say that’s just the way things go. But it kind of is. That’s just the way things go.

“I feel awful about it.”

The Cougars took their first lead of the game at 36-35 on a layup by Coyer with 5:21 to play in the third quarter and extended that margin to as much as 49-40 with 1:49 left in the period.

But to the Titans credit, they kept fighting.

T.C. Williams (22-5) scored the last eight points of the quarter to pull within 49-48 on a buzzer-beating jumper by senior guard Khalia Boston that sent the Titan fans — including Ruffin-Pratt — into a frenzy.

“I think trying to see the other four, five, six of them — the whole team — step up and try to fill that void … it’s a big void to fill,” Hagen said. “If Tierra were our only go-to then we would have lost by 40. … They just didn’t give up the whole time.”

Added Priester: “I thought their kids played their hearts out to make that run at us. Then I just told my kids, I said, ‘You could have folded after that. You could have said, you know what, this is just too much.'”

They didn’t.

Instead, after falling behind 52-51, on a jump shot by Titan senior Monica Fikes with 6:32 to play the Cougars regained control. Oakton went on a 8-0 run over the next three minutes of play, including two nice drives to the basket by senior forward Brianna Johnson and the third three-pointer of the game by sophomore Zora Stephenson.

The Cougars then iced the victory at the foul line. Senior Erin McGartland went a perfect 12-for-12 from the stripe during the game while Caroline Coyer fared 13-of-16, all but two of which came in the fourth quarter.

“We have a plan on free throws — we never practice them,” Priester said. “And we have never practiced free throws. What we do everyday, we do form shooting from spots on the floor. But we never actually practice free throws, and it’s been good to us.”

Both teams advance to the upcoming Virginia AAA state tournament. The Titans will travel to Virginia Commonwealth University’s Siegel Center to face the winner of the Central Region title game between Cosby and Atlee, which will be decided Wednesday night because of snow delays, at 7 p.m. Friday. The Cougars, meanwhile, will host the Central Region runner-up at 6:15 p.m. Saturday at Robinson.

“You know it wouldn’t be the worst thing that happened in my life if we played them again,” Priester said of the Titans. “Because that would mean we’d have to both be in the final game.”

Honorable Mentions (in no order):
Coyer Keeps Record Spotless
— No. 3 Oakton trailed No. 10 Mount Vernon by 19 in the second quarter, but Cougar freshman Caroline Coyer caught fire. Coyer scored 18 of her game-high 22 points in the last two-plus quarters as Oakton kept its perfect record in tact and advance to the Northern Region final.
Coleman Exclamation Point — McNamara center Brandon Coleman‘s dunk gave the Mustangs a four-point lead in OT and
was really the ****** blow in a 65-58 overtime win over Good Counsel in the WCAC
quarterfinals.
Tonkins Truck — Northern guard Malik Tonkins steals the ball and dishes
ahead to Dustin Jones to put the exclamation mark on the Patriots 68-61 win
over defending Maryland 3A state champ Largo on Friday night. The 5’5″
Tonkins scored a team-high 20 points and got a lift from his coach.
Orange Crush — Fighting Hornet swingman Dennis Brown gets a huge block in the lane and, in one motion, is headed up-court for a game-clinching, transition dunk in Orange County’s 65-59 road win over Broad Run in the Region II D4 semifinals.

No. 10 — Hulk, Smash!
Montgomery County, Maryland — Jaguar junior Willie Lee, nicknamed “Hulk,” recorded 26 points, 12 rebounds and 7 assists as Northwest — one year after a 1-21 season — defeated Wootton on the road in the first-round of the 4A West playoffs.

No. 9 — Three for All
Prince William County, Virginia — In a match-up of the Cedar Run and Cardinal District Players of the Year, Stonewall Jackson junior Kyani White and Forest Park senior Danni Jackson combined for 11 3-pointers in the Northwest Region championship. White won the barrage-de-trois, 6-5, but Jackson outscored her, 39-23, and the Bruins repeated as regional champs, 75-56.

No. 8 — Guerere Dagger
W.C.A.C., Va./Md./D.C. — O’Connell sophomore Alex Guerere wins the puck out of a forecheck, skates in and wrists a shot over the shoulder of the Stone Bridge goalie to lift the fourth-seeded Knights over the previously unbeaten Bulldogs — who had won 48 of their last 49 games. The win earned O’Connell a spot in the Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League finals.

No. 7 — Johnny on the Spot
S.M.A.C., Maryland — La Plata 125-pound wrestler Johnny Thomas gets a clutch, triple-overtime victory in the 4A/3A South Region Tournament on Saturday to capture one of the Warriors’ five individual championships. La Plata qualified 11 wrestlers for next week’s state tournament, where the Warriors look to defend last year’s state title.

No. 6 — Up, Up and Oladipo!
W.C.A.C., Va./Md./D.C. — DeMatha junior Victor Oladipo finishes a give-and-go with senior Marcus Rouse with the rim at eye level on the receiving end of a vicious fast-break alley-oop. The Stags beat St. Mary’s-Ryken, 55-42, in the W.C.A.C. quarterfinals. This was Oladipo’s only field goal.

No. 5 — A.J. Thomas Fires from Friendly
Prince George’s County, Maryland — In the Prince George’s County championship, and time winding down in the third quarter, Friendly senior A.J. Thomas drills a step-back 3-pointer from 35 feet out. The distance shot at the neutral site, Wise, gave the Patriots a one-point lead at the start of the fourth quarter.

No. 4 — Beale Un-Friendly Demeanor
Prince George’s County, Maryland — Later in that same game, Laurel junior Jerrium Beale is on the receiving end of senior Marcus Hebron‘s alley-oop pass for a jam over a Friendly defender to steal the momentum. The contested dunk was part of a decisive, 10-0 fourth-quarter run for Spartans.

No. 3 — Winbush … Winner
Northern Region, Virginia — In the Northern Region semifinals with the score tied at 57, Hayfield junior Brandon Winbush hits the game-winning 3-pointer with :03.2 seconds to defeat Mount Vernon — who entered with a 19-game winning streak — and lift the Hawks into the regional final and guarantee a berth in the state tournament.

No. 2 — HOLY Cross!
W.C.A.C., Va./Md./D.C. — In the W.C.A.C. semifinals on Sunday with the score tied at 44, Holy Cross senior NaTasha Thames — 10 seconds after missing a pair of would-be go-ahead free throws — channels her inner Lorenzo Charles, and gets a leaping, buzzer-beating putback to lift her team over Seton.

No. 1 — Clark Caps Cinderella Run
W.C.A.C., Va./Md./D.C. — With NVSHL Player of the Year Chris Bond absent — due to club commitments — O’Connell caps its Cinderella run, winning its first-ever NVSHL title over Forest Park, 6-5, on this overtime goal by Knight sophomore Chris Clark.
