Boys’ Soccer: Fairfax 2, Oakton 0

By Sam Dowell

Intern

After an uneventful first half this past Thursday, things started to get exciting for Fairfax’s home crowd.

Rebel senior striker Lonnie Carter broke the ice 15 minutes into the second half for the first of his two goals in what proved a 2-0 victory for Fairfax. Carter was able to run past the Oakton defenders and slip one past Cougar sophomore goalie Lucas Gillenwater.

“His speed to beat defenders and get to the ball is what made [Carter] so effective,” Fairfax Coach Kyle Morrisey said.

With 15 minutes to go in the game, Fairfax was fouled by Oakton right outside the 18, which resulted in a direct kick. Looking to give the Rebels a more comfortable lead, the aforementioned Carter stepped up to take the kick. He blasted his shot around the wall of defenders and it deflected off Gillenwater’s fingers and into the goal for his 10th of the season.

Carter’s second score gave the Rebels the cushion they needed, and were able to hold on to a 2-0 lead thanks to the shut out by Rebel senior goal keeper Sean Goudarzi.

“We really came together in the second half, got players forward and put two away,” said Rebel junior midfielder Ryan Rutherford.

Coming into the game, both teams were 0-3 in Concorde District play and looking to get out of last place.

“This win puts us back into the mix in the Concorde District,” Morrisey said.

Velocity Featured Athlete of the Week — April 28

By Angela Watts

one-on-one conversation with the Velocity Featured Athlete of the Week, found in a video
player just below the story.

Herndon senior pitcher Katie Briggs earned Velocity’s Featured Athlete of the Week honors after leading the Hornets to a 1-0 victory over visiting Robinson in eight innings on Thursday.

Not only did Briggs throw an excellent game — striking out 13 Rams’ batters in the game, including striking out the side in the second inning and fanning two batters in the third, fifth, sixth and eighth innings — she was provided the game-winning hit.

Locked in a scoreless tie in the bottom half of the eighth inning, Briggs took an outside pitch to deep right field to score senior second baseman
Chelsea Roseberry for a 1-0, walk-off
victory. Roseberry had reached on a single in the game’s first
additional inning and moved to second when senior center fielder Marra Hvozdovic drew a walk.

With the victory Herndon improved to 10-3 overall on the season with six regular-season games remaining.

Boys’ Lacrosse: Chantilly 9, Oakton 3

By Jimmy Thomas
Content Editor, DigitalSports.com

Check below the story for highlights from Thursdays game.

On a night where two of the best boys’ lacrosse teams in the Northern Region were set to square off, the game was instead overshadowed by a heartfelt pre-game ceremony on Senior Night.

On October 28, 2006 Oakton student-athlete Chris Kearns, a member of the Cougars’ lacrosse team, was tragically killed in a car accident. Thursday night the Oakton seniors invited Kearns’ parents, Rick and Sherry Kearns, to join them in remembering their son as their 11th senior.

Many of the visiting Charger players and parents who knew Kearns from youth leagues and club teams also participated in the commemoration by sewing the number 32 — Kearns’ lacrosse number — on the shoulder of their son’s jerseys.

“It was all the kids’ idea,” Chantilly Coach Kevin Broderick said. “And I think that’s a testament to what kind of kids they are and what kind of parents they have that they wanted to pay what I think is the ultimate compliment to the Kearns’ family.”

When the game started, however, the on-field rivalry continued.

It had been nine years and 15 games since the last time Chantilly defeated Oakton, a stretch that included the Cougars outscoring the Chargers by a whopping 246-83 margin. But the two teams entered Thursday night’s game with identical 5-0 records in the Concorde District and a No. 1 seed and first-round bye in next week’s district tournament on the line.

And end the end the Chargers broke the streak, defeating the host Cougars, 9-3.

Oakton got on the board first when junior James Wheatley scored just over two minutes in, but the Cougars were only able to score two more times as Charger junior goalkeeper Derek Kegerreis played lights out all night to lead his team to victory.

“We didn’t play as good on defense as we are capable of,” Broderick said. “But our goalie played outstanding and really saved us a number of times. Its a big win for the kids.”

Chantilly senior Joe Fratter scored the first goal of the game for the Chargers and went on to complete the hat-trick while senior teammate Tyler Ott earned a hat-trick of a different sort by totaling three assists. Chantilly also got two goals a piece from seniors Jake Nolan and Corey Aferiat.

The Chargers will attempt to complete an undefeated regular-season Friday when it hosts South county for their own Senior Night celebration while the Cougars travel to Madison on Saturday.

The Concorde District tournament is scheduled to start May 1.

VHSL Announces New Redistricting Plan for Northern Region

By Angela Watts
Managing Content Editor, DigitalSports.com

Two current members of the Northern Region — and two who would like to be — plead their cases before the Virginia High School League’s Redistricting and Reclassification committee Monday in Charlottesville.

But only the two current Northern Region schools — Hayfield and Stone Bridge — won the initial battle.

Hayfield, which is currently a member of the Patriot District, appealed its
continued placement there and requested to be moved to the National
District. And Stone Bridge, which currently a member of the Liberty District, appealed its
proposed move to the Cedar Run District in the Northwest Region and
requested to remain a member of the Liberty District.

Both requests were granted.

That was not the case for Heritage (AA Dulles District) and Loudoun Valley (AAA Cedar Run) of
Loudoun County, which appealed their proposed placement into the Cedar Run
District and, instead, requested to join the Northern Region. Heritage
asked to join as a member of the Liberty District; Loudoun Valley as a
member of the Concorde District.

Both of those requests were denied.

The only other change to the current alignment is Fairfax, which had previously been
moved out of the Concorde District, where it currently plays, and into the Liberty District.

A school still has one last opportunity to appeal the decisions that were made on Monday. It may appeal the R&R committee’s decision to the VHSL’s Executive Committee. No hearing will be held, but the Executive Committee will review the written record of the original appeal and issue its decision. The Executive Committe will meet May 7, and the final plan will go into effect July 1, 2009.

As it stands today, the most recent proposal for the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 school years is as follows:

Concorde District
Centreville (2283)
Chantilly (2835)

Girls’ Soccer: W.T. Woodson 2, Oakton 0

By Phil Murphy

** Check below the story to re-live Tuesday’s game in 9 minutes, 36 seconds! **

When junior varsity Oakton defender Erin Holden woke up Tuesday morning, she was probably thinking that she’d be playing the early game against W.T. Woodson and watching the varsity girls with her teammates from the sideline.

It’s doubtful that the freshman thought she would be watching that night’s varsity game from the field — much less standing in the goal.

But a pre-game installation as goalkeeper was necessary because of an injury to starting keeper Erica Stein, one of four Cougar starters sidelined with injury, and the freshman responded. Holden recorded seven saves against W.T. Woodson, winners of five straight entering the match, but the white-hot Cavaliers prevailed, defeating injury-plagued Oakton, 2-0, on the road.

“Both JV and varsity have a lot of injuries,” Cougars’ Coach Edward Brown said. “We played so poorly the last two games. To see this play out better, because this is a really good team, we still have some things to work out.

“Considering all the factors, we were missing three or four starters – three or four key starters – I feel a lot better about today than I have the last couple weeks.”

The Cavaliers were not without roster alterations themselves. Junior midfielder Niki Mercier was held out of the starting lineup, did not enter until the 18th minute and started the second half on the bench. However, Mercier optimized her limited minutes, leading all players in shot attempts (six) and scored the game-clinching goal for Woodson in the 61st minute.

“I have to try really hard when I’m out there, because I have to earn my spot back,” Mercier said. “It’s not going to be handed to me because there are a lot of girls that are good.”

Added W.T. Woodson coach Sharon Andrulot, whose only loss this season came to nationally-ranked Robinson: “She always makes the most of her playing time. She’s energetic, tenacious, she wins balls up top for us, loves shooting. She’s an impact player.”

But the short-handed Cougars did not concede defeat without quarrel. Oakton had more shots-on-goal than Woodson in the first half and held a decided possession advantage until Mercier took the field.

The Cougars, still trying to adjust to the 4-3-3 formation, ultimately gave way to the Cavalier pressure. In the 36th minute, after a steal in the offensive third, Woodson junior forward Lindsey Ottavio dragged the ball along the top of the 18-yard box and slotted a low shot inside the left post for a 1-0 lead.

“We were trying to play three forwards and three halfbacks,” said Brown, who has coached at Howard University, American University and was a former assistant on the Bermuda National Team. “Where that gets a little complicated is we play a zone defense. The girls were like, ‘What area do I take?’ They were used to having all four halfbacks.

“[The Cavaliers] were smart enough notice that the outsides become wide open. It’s like a press all the time and, if you don’t press, the other girls have room look and say, ‘Ah, there’s room on the outside.’ The other team figured that out pretty quickly, found the room outside and they were able to exploit it.”

Both teams return to district play later this week. The Cougars (2-4-0) look to stop their three-game skid at Herndon on Thursday, while the Cavaliers (6-1-1) go for their seventh consecutive win on Friday versus Langley.

“I know a couple of the girls from a lot of the team, so I try and figure out how they’re going to play,” said Mercier, a member of the U-16 Vista Shockwave club team. “We do a lot of talking, we exchange stuff because they’re on my club team. It’s going to be a pretty hard game, but I think we can handle it. That’s how it was against Stone Bridge.

“It’s just soccer.”
