Velocity Player of the Week — April 14

** DigitalSports videographer Phil Murphy sits down for a one-on-one conversation with the Velocity Player of the Week, found in a video player just below the story.

Langley senior center fielder Lindsay Brown blasted a two-run,
home run over the left-center field fence in the top of the ninth inning last Thursday to
break open the tie and lead the Saxons to a 9-6 victory at Madison.

Langley (9-1, 4-0 Liberty) entered Monday’s district game at Stone Bridge having won eight consecutive ball games, including outscoring Thomas Jefferson, South Lakes and W.T. Woodson by a combined total of 79-3 in the three games prior to facing the Warhawks.

Brown, whose younger sister Brooke, a sophomore, picked up the win from the pitching circle on Thursday, has been a big part of the reason for success. Lindsay totaled seven hits during the teams’ 4-1 run through its spring tournament in Myrtle Beach, and has been on fire at the plate ever since.

Boys’ Basketball: 35th Annual Capital Classic

By Angela Watts
Managing Content Editor, DigitalSports.com

** Check below each box score to find two separate video players with highlights from both Capital Classic games. Re-live the regional game in 9 minutes, and the national game in 8 minutes.**

Annandale senior Erik Etherly and T.C. Williams senior Anthony Winbush sat side-by-side chatting on the bench during Saturday’s 35th Annual Capital Classic at the University of Maryland Comcast Center.

And when Suburban teammate Austin Cooley from Bethesda Chevy-Chase went baseline midway through the fourth quarter for a nasty, alley-opp dunk that he was forced to stretch back with one hand to haul in —  and then throw down — the Northern Region pair leapt to their feet in celebration.

“Slam of the month!,” Etherly shouted.

And while it was certainly the best dunk of both of Saturday’s local and national Capital Classic games, the four Northern Region representatives — Etherly, Winbush, Mount Vernon senior Marquel De Lancey and Westfield senior Maurice Hubbard — had their share of highlights, too.

Etherly, in particular, sparkled in the second half of the afternoon’s first game, helping lead the Suburban All-Stars to a near-miraculous comeback over the District All-Stars in a 131-128 loss. The Suburban All-Stars trailed by as many as 19 points, but fought their way back and pulled within 111-110 with 4 minutes, 33 seconds to play on a one of Etherly’s four dunks.

The Suburban team never tied the game, but had a chance to send it to overtime with a three-point shot by Chase Smith of Eleanor Roosevelt, but it fell short at the buzzer to seal the game’s final margin.

Etherly finished tied for the team-high with 22 points, shooting 8-for-10 from the field and 6-for-7 from the foul line, adding eight rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals. Hubbard contributed six points, six rebounds and two steals for the Suburban squad, while Winbush finished with four points, three rebounds and one block.

“It was exciting,” Hubbard said. “It’s something I’ll definitely remember, and it’s a good way to finish my high school career. And it shows us just how much faster and stronger the game will be at the next level.”

De Lancey (five rebounds, two assists) was the Northern Region’s lone representative in the second, national game, which pitted the Capital All-Stars against the U.S. All-Stars in what turned out to be a big, 123-85 victory for the U.S. squad.

This year’s U.S. roster was highlighted by Maryland-bound Sean Mosley (16 points, six assists) from St. Frances Academy in Baltimore and Duke-bound Olek Czyz (game-high 23 points) from Reno High in Nevada. Former U.S. players have included the likes of Carmelo Anthony, Patrick Ewing, LeBron James, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Jason Kidd, Chris Paul, Amare Stoudemire, Ralph Sampson and Dominique Wilkins.

“I appreciate getting picked to play in the national game … it’s truly an honor,” said De Lancey, who will play next season at Old Dominion University. “I just wish I would have played better. But it shows me what I have to do, what I have to work on before next year. I have to get used to the speed of the game, and hit the weight room.”

In addition to their memories, all four area players left the game with hearty smiles and backpacks filled with free gear from Converse and the event’s title sponsor, Under Armour.

“This was a lot of fun,” Etherly said with a grin. “I’d say it probably ranks second only to the DigitalSports Showcase as far as this season’s highlights go.”

Softball: Westfield 8, Oakton 5

By Angela Watts

** Look below the story for video highlights from Tuesday’s game.

Westfield senior center fielder Anna Munizza wasn’t at the Washington National season-opener Sunday night when third-baseman Ryan Zimmerman hit a walk-off home run that sent the hometown fans into a frenzy. But her dad was at the game … and she knew what had happened.

“I wasn’t there, but I heard about it,” Munizza said.

And Tuesday night at Westfield, she experienced it.

Munizza belted a three-run, home run over the left/center field fence in the bottom half of the seventh inning to cap a come-from-behind, 8-5 Bulldog victory.

“I haven’t been a part of any of those,” Westfield Coach Dean Ferington said. “But as soon as she hit it I thought it had a chance. It’s good for her. Our seniors have been sort of struggling a little bit, and it’s good for them to contribute late like that.”

Trailing Oakton 5-2 at the end of the fifth inning, Westfield scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull withing 5-4. And then in the seventh, the Bulldogs’ rallied. Freshman shortstop Jessica McNamera led off the inning with a single to reach base, and freshman second baseman/pitcher Jackie Martinez moved her to second with a shot of her own. McNamera scored on another hit by freshman third baseman Frankie Martinez to knot the score, and then Munizza — one of only three seniors on the Bulldog roster — ended it with her three-run, walk-off home run.

“Coach told us to keep fighting and finish it,” said Jackie Martinez, who moved from second base to the pitching circle in the fifth inning. “And I wished for that [ending]. As soon as she hit it I knew it was gone. Anna did good.”

The over-the-fence hit sealed the Bulldogs’ victory, their sixth in eight games this season. It also spelled disaster for the Cougars, who have lost three of their past five outings.

“That game should have been out of reach in the third inning,” said Coach Pat Purcell, whose team held a 4-1 lead at the end of three. “That’s the bottom line. There’s nothing else I can say. Mentally we weren’t in the game. It was a mental breakdown … and until we clean that up we’re going to be in trouble in games like this.”

Baseball: No. 7 Westfield 7, No. 1 Oakton 1

By Jimmy Thomas
Content Editor, DigitalSports.com

** Check below the story for highlights from Tuesday’s game.

Senior Tommy Fenyak threw a complete game three-hitter Tuesday night to lead No. 7 Westfield to a home, 7-1 victory over top-ranked Oakton.

It took no time for the Bulldogs’ offense to get started as freshman lead-off hitter Aaron Hoover and senior second baseman Richie Brown started the bottom half of the first inning with back-to-back doubles.

Already up 1-0, senior first baseman and Ole Miss-bound Matt Snyder stepped to the plate and delivered a two-run home run over the scoreboard in right/center field to give Westfield a 3-0 edge after one inning. Snyder’s twin brother, Mike Snyder, plays first base for the Bulldogs and will be joining his brother this fall at Mississippi.

Those first three runs proved to be all the leeway Fenyak needed. He did much of the rest of the work himself, getting two Cougars to hit into double-plays in the first and fourth innings and retiring the final nine Oakton batters in order.

“It feels great,” Fenyak said. “The team played well and backed me up. We scored some runs. It was a good game.”

Brown homered in the fifth inning to cap a perfect, 4-for-4 night at the plate and finished the game a mere a double shy of the hitting for the cycle.

Westfield has won three of its past four games and will host Forest Park at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Oakton, whose lone run came in third inning when senior catcher Keith Werman was hit by a pitch and later scored on a fielders’ choice, will host Centreville at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
