Gymnastics: Concorde District Championships

By Jeffery Gibert
West Potomac Senior, DigitalSports Intern

** Click the links above to see dozens of video highlights from Thursday’s championship meet … and look below the story for full results!

With Herndon junior Maria Hayden, who is widely regarded as the best gymnast in the Northern Region, out with a separated shoulder, it was Chantilly senior Elly Taura who stole the show at the 2009 Concorde District gymnastics championships.

“It hurt a lot to watch the meet and not be able to compete and help the team,” said Hayden, the defending Northern Region all-around champion who will miss the remainder of the high school season. “We had a chance of going to regionals as a team and I really wanted to be a part of that.

“But … I guess things happen.”

Taura, who helped the Chargers to the team championship, won four of the five titles that were up for grabs Thursday night at Centreville High School.

“I’ve been doing high school gymnastics for four years and I’ve never really captured the all-around title,” Taura said. “So this year was a good last year for senior year.

“It was awesome.”

Taura won the all-around competition with a score of 37.250, followed by Robinson‘s Amanda Famiglletti
(36.050), Herndon’s Lauren Sullivan (36.025) and Chantilly’s Lyndsey Saunders
(35.250).

All four competitors advance to next weekend’s Northern Region tournament at Lake Braddock.

Taura also took first on the vault, followed by Sullivan, Chantilly’s Katie Guryansky, Herndon’s Qadera Malveaux, Chantilly’s Heather Guryansky, Famiglletti (sixth), Fairfax‘s Alexa Kopach and Chantilly’s Lani Kroese, all of whom also advanced to regionals.

On the uneven bars Taura again placed first, followed by Famiglletti, Saunders, Chantilly’s Heather Guryansky, Sullivan, Fairfax’s Megan Bayne, Chantilly’s Dana O’Conner and Kroese. All eight advanced to regionals.

On the balance beam it was Centreville sophomore Mariah Rivera who captured first place, followed by Sullivan, Famiglletti, Taura, Kopach, Saunders, Kroese and Robinson’s Sarah Paul.

Again, all eight girls advanced to regionals on that event.

“It means a lot to me,” Rivera said. “I’ve never actually won first place in anything for high school gymnastics, so this is a first.

“I’m really happy that I did.”

In the floor exercise, Taura re-gained her first-place finish, followed by Rivera, Kopach, Sullivan, Kroese, Katie Guryansky, Famiglletti and Saunders, all of whom advanced to the regional meet.

The two teams that will join these individuals at the regional meet are Chantilly, who took first with a total of 143.325 points and Robinson, finishing second with 133.550 points.
