Centreville (2-5, 0-2) at Oakton (4-3, 1-1), 7:30 p.m. Friday
Last Week: Centreville lost at Chantilly, 35-25; Oakton won at Herndon, 38-13
PowerPoints: Centreville – 15th (Div. 6); Oakton – 6th (Div. 6)
Offensive Rank (Pts/Game): Centreville – 7th (Div. 6); Oakton – 9th (Div. 6)
Defensive Rank (Pts/Game): Centreville – 15th (Div. 6); Oakton – 6th (Div. 6)

Prepare yourself for arguably the best one-on-one match-up this year, as Centreville senior wide receiver Warren Denny looks to get by Oakton senior defensive back Andrew Leonard.

Denny has 31 receptions for 439 yards and two scores this season. That includes 10 grabs for 119 yards last week in a 35-25 road loss to Chantilly.

Denny was a second-team all-region member last season.

Leonard has five interceptions this season, including two last week in a 38-13 road win over Herndon.

He was one of three underclassmen to make first-team all-region last year. He was also a second-team all-state DB.

The Cougars have won six consecutive games in this series, but only last year’s 47-14 win came by more than seven points. The Wildcats won five straight meetings before that.

Centreville’s offensive firepower and Oakton’s athletic defense, which also features a capable corps of linebackers and linemen, will likely offset.

For the Wildcats to snap their nine-game losing streak to Concorde opponents, they need to rekindle the running game that worked so effectively in their wins over Yorktown and Mount Vernon. Though senior quarterback Cam Walter has thrown for 692 yards in the last two weeks, Centreville was held to 53 and 54 total rushing yards in the last two games.

Oakton, meanwhile, needs another stellar effort from junior quarterback Jimmy Boone. After two losses in a row, the first-year starter’s box against Herndon read: 9-for-19, 132 yards, TD, 0 INT with 15 carries for a team-high 92 yards and a score.

This week, he faces a defense that yields more points per game than any other in Division 6. But the Wildcats have outscored their last three opponents 44-0 in the final 11 minutes.

If Boone repeats that night, Leonard and senior linebacker Sean Schnitzer stall the running game, Oakton will get a pivotal fifth win with Robinson and Chantilly looming in its final two weeks.

Centreville needs a win to keep its slim playoff hopes alive.
