After jumping out to a nine point lead at half time South Lakes held off a late surge by Friendly to win the Jim McKay Chevrolet summer league basketball championship, 61-57, on Monday night.
With just over four minutes remaining A.J. Thomas hit a jumper from the wing for three of his 24 points pulling the Patriots even for the first time in the game at 46-46. But on the next possession Seahawk power forward Jamal Hulum scored and was fouled, pushing the lead to three before point guard Travis Williams took over.
With three minutes remaining Williams ripped off eight straight points en route to his game high 25 to earn game MVP honors.
“Travis played really well,” said Coach Rob Robinson, a former South Lakes standout. “He did a great job of being a leader and understanding the game situations. He is going to be really good in the upcoming season.”
Robinson, who was high school teammates with NBA star Grant Hill, will be an assistant at Oakton next season.
Hulum was the only other Seahawk player in double figures with 16 points. Reginald Sims scored 13 for Friendly and Montez Bentley added 8.
